Sometimes life can be overwhelming and you may want to make changes but not know how. You may even have tried different things but nothing has worked consistently or enabled you to live the life you envision for yourself. I work with teens, young adults and adults many who seek therapy to address anxiety, depression, trauma and life transitions. I also work with with athletes and high performing executives to enhance performance, vitality and overall well-being. My journey has included being a collegiate Academic and Athletic All-American Swimmer, psychologist, teacher, parent, and coach. I've spent over 25 years studying and practicing psychology and holistic healing including: energy medicine, healing arts, Reiki, meditation, and astrology. I take all of that and customize treatment to facilitate your well-being. We look at where you are in life right now in comparison to where you want to be and I help empower you on your journey to mindfully creating the life you desire. Many believe expressing your feelings is a sign of weakness, creating a stigma surrounding mental health. However, the exact opposite is true! Knowing when to ask for help shows courage, strength, and wisdom. Physical and emotional health are tightly intertwined. When we know precisely what is wrong, we can face the problem head-on, allowing us to see firsthand that knowledge is power! I was first introduced to depression and anxiety through a wiry, slightly rumpled, highly cantankerous psychology professor when I was only 19 years old. I will never forget that lecture as long as I live. As he presented the 'day’s topic,' he peered intently around the room as if he could read our very thoughts. Then, he threw down his book and left the room without warning, leaving us there in stunned silence. After what seemed like an hour (probably only five minutes), he returned with 25 lb. weights strapped to each arm and leg and a pack filled with two 50 lbs. fastened to his back. As he began to lecture, he proceeded to pace up and down each row of the classroom. He was not a young man, and as he talked, he became winded and was forced to stop and catch his breath. He was an excellent orator, by history, but on this day, he seemed entirely out of his comfort zone. He was confused, preoccupied, stressed, and somewhat fragile. As the class concluded and we began to slowly make our way to the door, the professor said, “Oh, and by the way, living with depression and anxiety is much like trying to do a simple daily task with over 200 lbs. of weight strapped to your very soul. Now, go and have a good evening.” Having struggled with depression and anxiety throughout my adult life, and now as a counselor, I will have to say that the professor’s illustration was prophetically spot on! In fact, it was brilliant!

Denver, Colorado therapist: Greta Carlson, Psy.D., ABPP, psychologist
CBT

Greta Carlson, Psy.D., ABPP

Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Welcome! I'm a clinical psychologist with nearly a decade of clinical experience working with children, adolescents, and adults of all ages. I see children, adolescents, and young adults aged 5 and up with depression, chronic PTSD and dissociation, anxiety, OCD, and ADHD. My clients present with a range of concerns, including anxiety, ruminative thoughts, shame feelings, and perfectionism. Having had extensive experience in both psychodynamic psychotherapy and Trauma Focused-CBT, I take an integrative approach when working with clients-I collaborate with you and your child to tailor your goals and address needs for treatment. While we would tailor treatment to further draw out and address your goals, I work to help you get to know yourself-to name and regulate a range of feelings, identify negative beliefs about yourself, others, or the world, and find healthier ways to cope with strong feelings. I also consider how your past history is relevant to your present relationships. The decision to seek therapy is such a courageous one. I think, oftentimes, we can tell ourselves that we can "think through" or "solve problems" entirely on our own-it's so difficult to reach out for support! I work at a pace that feels manageable for you or your child, focusing on creating a warm and collaborative alliance for therapy and assessment.
