After working in the addiction field for many years, I can empathize with the hardships addiction presents. It can impact many important areas of your life, and trying to repair these areas can seem overwhelming. Attempting to stop the cycle of addiction may seem impossible, however, I want to offer you a safe space to talk about the thoughts, emotions and circumstances that potentially lead you down this path. I am also knowledgeable in various addiction community resources that may be an additional source of support.

No one intends to lose control over substance use. Instead the initial drinking or drug use was fun, comforting or a much needed escape. However, as many as 21.6% of Canadians will lose this form of substance use control. I spent the first four years of my undergrad education trying to understand the multitude of influences that make good people vulnerable to substance use struggles. These include neurobiological factors, trauma, lack of healthy coping skills, untreated mental health concerns, broken sense of self, lack of purpose, environmental influences and interpersonal struggles. A thorough assessment to determine what factors may have triggered or are maintaining your personal substance use is therefore imperative to developing an effective treatment plan. Reduction or abstinence from substances almost always involves addressing these numerous biological, psychological and social factors that have maintained your substance use, so you can rediscover your best self.

Addiction is a symptom of mental health issues. Substances are used for a variety of reasons, always in search of something positive. Some people use them to dampen down their nervous system, some people use them because they would rather be anywhere than in their sober mind frame. We will look at what you use substances for and take it from there.

Addictions are behaviours in which we engage to enable us to cope with deep emotional pain, usually stemming from some form of trauma in our lives. Social and environmental factors can also play a role in developing addictions. Addictions include the use of alcohol, drugs, sex, pornography, gambling, smoking, shopping, etc. as a way to provide temporary relief from the painful thoughts and negative feelings that arise within us. Over time addictions establish themselves as the go-to relief to cope with our emotions, but at the same time render us less functional. Our relationships, work, and homelife begin to suffer from the consequences of the addiction. Talking therapy can help to uncover and resolve the pain that lies beneath addiction and over time help us to reconnect with our inner selves and to discover and develop behavioural responses to replace the addictive behaviour.
