Trauma can be the catalyst for any mental health concern that impedes our ability to live our best life. Often when trauma is discussed we immediately think of experiences related to bodily harm including childhood abuse, violence, warfare, serious accidents and sexual assault. However, trauma can also refer to incidents that do not threaten one’s physical life but still disrupt emotional functioning. Examples include divorce, interpersonal conflict, infertility, financial loss, infidelity and legal trouble. I decided to obtain specialized training in trauma when I realized how frequently it was impacting peoples’ ability to be their best selves. People would often tell me that they “knew” cognitively that their thinking post trauma was impeding their progress. However, simply changing their thoughts was failing to change the physiological response their body was having in situations that triggered their trauma related memories. I therefore decided to pursue training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) and ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) to help people achieve peaceful congruency between their mind and body post trauma.

Psychologist, M.C., Registered Psychologist
Trauma is how our bodies and minds react to distressing events of the past. Sometimes trauma results in a diagnosis of PTSD, but it can also lead to various other mental health diagnoses. Trauma can show up for us in many different ways, but it can often impede our ability to connect with others, be our full genuine selves and live our lives to the fullest. In our work together, we’ll start to identify signs of trauma, how it’s impacting you and work on ways to process through it. I have training in Accelerated Resolution Therapy, which is a treatment modality for processing trauma.

The effects of trauma can leave us feeling vulnerable and unsafe long after the event itself. So often people can be left feeling hopeless, disconnected, and ashamed. Healing these wounds are essential to developing a strong sense of self, positive self view, and safety within relationships. I work from a trauma-informed perspective and pull from approaches that will allow us to build an understanding of the protective strategies formed to survive the emotional and mental impact of the trauma, and cultivate self-acceptance and trust with ourselves and others.
