Roxanne Hahn
Counsellor/Therapist, RTC (registered therapeutic counselor)
I help clients manage social anxiety by creating a safe, supportive space to explore fears, self-judgments, and patterns that make social situations overwhelming. Together, we uncover the stories and beliefs that fuel anxiety, while using practical strategies and mind–body techniques to build awareness, regulation, and confidence. The goal is not just to cope, but to gradually feel more comfortable, present, and connected in social interactions, empowering you to engage with others in ways that feel authentic and manageable.

A Counselor’s Note on Working With Social Anxiety
When I first meet a client whose world feels confined to the margins of a crowded room, my primary aim is to create a space where safety is felt as tangibly as a breath of fresh air. Social anxiety is not simply “shyness”; it is a cascade of physiological alarms, self‑critical narratives, and learned avoidance that can imprison a person in a paradox—craving connection while fearing the very act of reaching out.
My work begins by normalizing the experience. I invite clients to label the sensations that surface in social moments—racing heart, tight chest, the mental replay of imagined judgment. By externalizing these cues, we can begin to map the pattern rather than being swept by it. I use a collaborative “anxiety diary” that tracks triggers, thoughts, and outcomes, turning abstract dread into observable data.
From there, we gradually test the edges of avoidance through the principle of graded exposure. Small, purposeful steps—sending a brief text, making eye contact for a few seconds, attending a brief group activity—are rehearsed in‑session, de‑scripted, and then applied in real life. Each successful step, no matter how modest, is celebrated as evidence that the brain’s alarm system can be recalibrated.
Cognitive restructuring runs alongside exposure. Together we examine the automatic “what‑if” statements (“What if they think I’m weird?”) and replace them with flexible alternatives (“I may feel nervous, but I can still contribute”). Mindfulness practices help clients anchor themselves in the present moment, reducing the pull of catastrophic forecasting.
Throughout, I emphasize self‑compassion. The inner critic that fuels social anxiety often masquerades as a well‑intentioned protector. Learning to speak to oneself with kindness—“I’m learning, and that’s enough”—creates the internal support system that can sustain external practice.
Ultimately, my goal is to help clients discover that social interactions, while sometimes uncomfortable, are also opportunities for growth, belonging, and genuine connection. With patience, curiosity, and incremental practice, the once‑overwhelming social world can become a landscape they navigate with confidence.
