Anger is an important emotion that is important to understand theoretically, and important to know how to manage in day to day life. There is no "right way" to deal with anger (although people who've been institutionalized may have been told otherwise). As with all emotions, we have choice and agency in how we respond to anger. I was an extremely angry child/young man (perhaps not surprising, because I was taught to suppress it). I have training in traditional anger management strategies, and have written academic papers comparing different therapeutic approaches. The main thing I learned from research into anger and ways to deal with it is that what works in the short-term is often not helpful long term. We need to understand this and develop strategies for managing our situational anger, whilst simultaneously working on ourselves to become people with the ability to transcend anger-fueled behaviours/lifestyles. There are important gender factors to keep in mind when working with anger, and my experience helping people with anger is mostly limited to male-identifying individuals. Working with me to resolve pathological anger will require openness, patience, and vulnerability. There are different ways this can be done, so know that you'll have choices, including the pace of change. When I see clients who want to change their relationships to anger, I come from a compassionate, interpersonal, and skills-development perspective. My approach to this challenge involves mindfulness, narrative, and cognitive behavioural therapies.

If you are struggling with anger issues or feeling triggered or overwhelmed by anger or resentment please reach out to me. This is a common struggle for those who grew up in a household where anger wasn’t an accepted emotion so it is then suppressed. This can lead to more anger and depression. I love seeing the results my clients get when they work with me on their anger and take control of their emotions . I can provide you with tools to manage it in a healthy way.

Anger is an emotion that can be healthy in certain cases depending on the circumstances. It is one of the primal instincts often used to defend yourself or someone else if there is a feeling of danger or injustice. When people get angry often they have a belief (conscious or unconscious) that someone did something wrong deliberately against them. Whether it is true or not highly differs. In some cases anger becomes a part of “toxic” communication styles that can make someone feel more powerful and important, more “right”, at the same time draining another person’s energy. Some people get energy from being angry or get some kind of release, others can’t even function properly after “absorbing” someone’s anger, e.g. HSPs and empaths. It really varies depending on the temperament, personality type and other factors. Essentially in many cases whether it is a relationship in family, work or with friends or even strangers it can prevent a person from feeling what genuinely can make them happy and fulfilled and what can help the relationship become more authentic, fair and nourishing. When you become a slave of your own or someone else’s anger, it is hard to find emotional balance and keep it for a reasonable time. Triggers can bring you back to anger. It often escalates back and forth. It is very sad to see such patterns. What is OK for you in terms of anger levels might not be acceptable for the other person. Negative emotions can get “stuck” in the body and block positive emotions and feelings. Managing your anger or coping with a relationship which has anger patterns as part of the communication is an essential part of emotional health and personal growth. I find emotion-image therapy, art therapy and metaphorical cards unvaluable in working with anger-related therapy requests. At times even 1-3 sessions can make a difference, provide some insights. Or course as often I recommend taking at least 5-12 sessions to work on emotional balance and communication related requests.
