Traumatic experiences can continue to shape the way we think, feel, and relate long after the event has passed. Healing begins by creating a safe space to gently process those experiences and reclaim parts of yourself that may have been lost along the way.

Valencia, California therapist: TREATMENT AND TOOLS FOR TRAUMA, licensed psychoanalyst

TREATMENT AND TOOLS FOR TRAUMA

Licensed Psychoanalyst, PH.D., IN PSYCHOANALYSIS AND NEUROSCIENCE, CERTIFIED PSYCHOANALYST, PSY.A, & LICENSED PSYCHOANALYST
PTSD requires lots of patience as the individual in treatment learns to interact with the world again. Traumatic experiences shut down everything in the person's mind/body, and in their social interactions, and create a lot of isolation. To counter all this, I recommend a unique program for each patient that includes talking at least twice a week, micro-stimulation to develop new pathways in the brain, supplements to heal the brain, music therapy (see Steven Halpern), sleep therapy, and the creation of "flow experiences" to strengthen the person's sense of self. Trauma is not easy to turn around, But, over a consistent period of time, expressing one's emotions and following a set routine (including the above), will always lead to healing.

Dr. Mitch Keil, PsyD

Psychologist, Keil Psych Group
Trauma isn't only about what happened to you. It's also about what you had to do psychologically to survive what happened—and the ways those adaptations may still be shaping your life today. People struggling with trauma or PTSD may experience anxiety, hypervigilance, intrusive memories, nightmares, emotional numbness, shame, anger, avoidance, or difficulty feeling safe and connected in relationships. Others don't necessarily identify themselves as traumatized at all. They simply know that certain patterns, feelings, or experiences seem to have a grip on them that they can't fully explain. Our approach to trauma therapy is depth-oriented, relational, and carefully paced. We don't believe healing requires forcing you to repeatedly relive painful experiences before you're ready. We first work to establish safety, strengthen your ability to regulate difficult emotions, and understand the ways your mind and body learned to protect you. From there, therapy can help you process what happened, make sense of its impact, and work through the emotions and relationship patterns that remain. We integrate psychodynamic and attachment-based therapy with evidence-informed trauma treatment, mindfulness, and practical tools for managing PTSD symptoms when helpful. The relationship with your therapist also matters. Trauma often happens in relationships, and experiencing safety, consistency, trust, and emotional understanding with another person can itself become an important part of recovery. The goal isn't to erase what happened or return you to the person you were before it. It's to help the past become the past—something that remains part of your story without continuing to dictate your present.
