Discovering or navigating infidelity can shake the ground under a relationship. There are ways for couples to get over an affair! Therapy can help a couple explore the 'why' behind the affair, learn how to grieve the feelings of betrayal and loss, and recover from the trauma of the infidelity. Couple Therapy can then help the partners rebuild their marriage and restore lost trust so that the bond is deeper and stronger than ever before!

In my work with couples, I don't believe infidelity is the final straw to end the relationship. The challenges that are presented with this issue are great, but I believe we can work to truly find out what is best for the both of you when it comes to managing this.

Affairs are deeply life altering and one of, if not the most painful experiences a relationship can endure. The betrayal is in many ways a form of trauma that requires repairing and healing. From working with many couples that have experienced progress with this issue, two things are pivotal for recovery:
1. It's paramount that the injured partner is given the space to express how hurt, disappointed, angry, and in pain they are due to this event. Only until the injured partner "feels felt" (understood fully) will it be possible for them to reach back out to the partner that did the hurting to understand the meaning and why it happened.
2. I'm of the belief that while affairs are catastrophic and extremely difficult, it can also be the very thing that preserves the relationship, it serves as a door to look into what conditions were put in place that allowed for the affair to happen in the first place. This helps the relationship grow, redefine and creates opportunity for a second relationship if both people are committed to the work of repair and curiosity.

Alan Jacobson, Psy.D.
Psychologist, Licensed Psychologist, Nationally Registered Health Service Provider
I work with couples where infidelity has been an issue, helping them find a path to forgiveness and navigate the emotional aftereffects. I also work with individuals who want to sort out the emotional impact of infidelity. For individuals, even when forgiveness is not possible, therapy can help people overcome and understand the feelings it produces in order to emerge stronger.
