Los Angeles, California therapist: Brooke Taylor, pre-licensed professional
Grief

Brooke Taylor

Pre-Licensed Professional, MA, AMFT
Grief isn't only about death. For a teen it can be the divorce, the move, the friend group that closed ranks, the parent who isn't the same anymore, the version of their life that ended without anyone calling it a loss. Teens often grieve without the language for it, and without permission, the people around them are grieving too, or the loss doesn't look like one from the outside. It also rarely looks like sadness. It can show up as anger, numbness, a sudden drop in school, clinginess or distance, or a teen who seems fine for weeks and then isn't. Grief in adolescence tends to come in waves rather than stages, and it often resurfaces later, at each new developmental step. I work with teens through losses of both kinds: the external ones: a death, a separation, a major transition and the internal ones, the mourning of who they were, where they belonged, or how safe the world used to feel. Together we make space for what they're carrying without rushing it. My work draws on relational trauma therapy, mindfulness, and somatic awareness, which matters here because grief lives in the body as much as the mind. The goal isn't to move your teen past it. It's to help them carry it in a way that leaves room for the rest of their life.

Grief

Lisa Paer

Counselor/Therapist, LMFT, LPCC, EMDR Certified
Losing someone or something you love can be one of the most difficult and painful experiences in life. It can leave you feeling overwhelmed, lonely, and hopeless. I went through it myself after the death of my father, and I know how hard it can be to cope with the emotions and challenges that come with bereavement. I can provide a safe and supportive space where you can express your feelings, process your loss, and find ways to heal. I use techniques such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and EMDR to help you process the pain of grief and adjust to a world without your loved one. I respect your individuality and your unique way of grieving. I will not judge you or try to change you. I will listen to you and collaborate with you to achieve your goals. Grief is a natural and normal response to loss, and I can help support you though it.

Marriage and Family Therapist, M.A., LMFT #119163
Death. The most universal of life experiences. So why are we afraid to talk about it? We use euphemistic language in an effort to . . . what exactly? Does imagining her in “a better place” take the pain away? What do we say when children ask if they can visit this place, or when the deceased will return home? And then the casseroles and phone calls taper off. Always too soon. Then people stop asking, as though their questions will bring her to mind and cause you to suffer. Don’t they know you think of her every day? Grief doesn’t ever really go away; it changes over time. Just when you think you are coping better with the loss, the holidays arrive, or the one-year anniversary hits, and there you are, overwhelmed by difficult emotions once again. I would be honored to sit alongside you on this difficult, and often lonely, journey.

Downey is a southeast Los Angeles County city known as a hub of Latino middle-class life, with deep Mexican-American roots, strong family networks, and a proud civic identity (and NASA-era aerospace history). Mental health needs center on intergenerational family dynamics, work and financial stress, and stigma that still frames therapy as a last resort for many. Rancho Los Amigos' renowned rehabilitation campus anchors regional healthcare, with LA's market and Spanish-language practitioners key to access.
