Grief isn't only about death. For a teen it can be the divorce, the move, the friend group that closed ranks, the parent who isn't the same anymore, the version of their life that ended without anyone calling it a loss. Teens often grieve without the language for it, and without permission, the people around them are grieving too, or the loss doesn't look like one from the outside.
It also rarely looks like sadness. It can show up as anger, numbness, a sudden drop in school, clinginess or distance, or a teen who seems fine for weeks and then isn't. Grief in adolescence tends to come in waves rather than stages, and it often resurfaces later, at each new developmental step.
I work with teens through losses of both kinds: the external ones: a death, a separation, a major transition and the internal ones, the mourning of who they were, where they belonged, or how safe the world used to feel.
Together we make space for what they're carrying without rushing it. My work draws on relational trauma therapy, mindfulness, and somatic awareness, which matters here because grief lives in the body as much as the mind. The goal isn't to move your teen past it. It's to help them carry it in a way that leaves room for the rest of their life.
