Dissociation can show up as feeling disconnected from your thoughts, emotions, or sense of self. I provide a steady and grounding therapeutic space to help individuals understand these experiences and the role they have played in managing overwhelming situations. Dissociative Disorders occur when the mind is overwhelmed and needs to "check out." This is an automatic process, especially when the person has nowhere to turn for relief from their suffering. Then the mind does its job to protect the person by disconnecting and "going" elsewhere. Dissociative Disorders are almost always the result of trauma, some type of traumatizing experience. In my experience, these kinds of disorders require long-term treatment 2-3 times per week. Just being present in the room with the patient is where I start. Creating a very safe environment that is conducive to talking about your experiences. As the patient begins to experience a safer space I will add the supplements, diet and exercise, and the creation of special "flow experiences" for the patient. You are welcome to call my office at 661-478-0667 for an evaluation.

Dissociative Disorders

Growth and Change Counseling

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
Sometimes in life, an experience so traumatic happens that my psyche splits and cuts off part of myself in order to protect myself from what happened. It was a defensive mechanism at the time of the trauma to protect me from my incapacity to process it, but now its also created a situation where part of me is cut off from the other part of me. If I stay this way, I remain stuck in a fragmented or wounded place psychologically. The reality is we all want to be whole and part of healing may involve a process of reintegrating all the parts of myself with each other. If you think you may be dissociating, call us. We would come alongside you to help you.

Viktoria Walda Byczkiewicz, Ph.D.

Dissociation typically stems from trauma as a response to keeping a core part of the self safe. Human beings are neurologically wired to protect themselves from harm. Yet this learned response to abuse or terror may no longer serve its purpose and may be inhibiting you from living freely and fully engaging in meaningful activities or relationships. I can help you to explore--unobtrusively and at your pace--how to acquire mastery over the mechanisms that you developed to keep yourself safe.

Huntington Beach — 'Surf City USA' — cultivates a strong outdoor and athletic identity that creates particular mental health dynamics around body image, performance anxiety, and the psychological costs of a lifestyle culture that prizes youth and physical capability. The city's predominantly White, affluent coastal character contrasts with pockets of economic precarity and a substance use landscape connected to its beach culture and proximity to the broader Orange County recovery community. Hoag Hospital provides institutional mental health resources alongside a well-established private therapy community serving Huntington Beach and the surrounding South Orange County coastal corridor. The city's proximity to both Los Angeles and the Orange County recovery ecosystem means therapists here frequently work at the intersection of addiction, identity, and the particular stresses of competitive coastal California life.
