Newport Beach is an affluent city in Orange County, California, which appears to share a lot of the same mental health concerns as the rest of the affluent Orange County area. High instances of behavioral health concerns such as binge drinking and the increasing rates of prescription drug abuse — particularly anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medication and pain killers — have all been cause for concern over the last decade. According to the Orange Country Department of Public Health (OCDPH), in the past 13 years the number of prescription drug-related overdoses has more than doubled while population growth saw only slight movement from around 81,000 to approximately 83,000.
Outside of the addiction epidemic, the physical health of those that live in Newport Beach is quite good and is at or above average in comparison to the rest of the state (according to the same report), in most categories.
Mental health on the other hand, is becoming a concern. Instances of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related conditions is approximately 5-percent higher per 1,000 in population than the rest of California, and almost 10-percent higher than the national average (according to the OCDPH study). The mental health of older adults, specifically, is of increased concern, as they are the fastest growing age group in all of Orange County. Due to increased life expectancy, these conditions are becoming more costly to treat which leaves Newport Beach and the State of California with a looming problem that will have to be addressed in the near future.
According to the same two reports, instances of anxiety and depression also appear to be on the rise for all age groups, although neither is substantially higher than the state average. Fascinatingly, the research seems to suggest that the more affluent the area (at least in California) the higher the instances of mental health diagnosis. However, this may be anecdotal and easily explained by the increased mental health care afforded by those with excellent insurance plans, or enough income to pay out of pocket.
