San Francisco, California therapist: James Norwood, psychologist
Schizophrenia

James Norwood

Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist
Most therapists today consider Schizophrenia and psychosis to be exclusively neurochemical diagnoses. However, psychotic experience occurs in a personal and meaningful way. Patients should have someone to talk to who does not find these experiences foreign and confusing but rather someone who appreciates the meaning embedded in these experiences.

Schizophrenia is a specific type of psychosis characterized by delusions and hallucinations. It is considered to be a thought disorder as opposed to a mood disorder such manic-depression (bipolar I and II). Anti-psychotic medications can be helpful initially to "clear" the mind, but I believe the most important aspect of the treatment is the psychoanalytic relationship over a number years. I believe schizophrenia, like all mental illness, is based in traumatic experiences for the individual and can best be dealt with treating the brain with nutrients and the mind with very careful talk therapy over a number of years.
