Distress, fear, worry and apprehension are common when faced with unwanted or unexpected change. We can learn tools to manage--even thrive--in spite of our uncomfortable emotional responses to the challenges in our lives.
The pain you are experiencing is not who you are, it is a message that shows what's out of balance. When anxiety and fears show up in the body &/or mind as symptoms, we are being called to change, to create a life of ease and relief from our critical inner voices and demands. I believe that we all have a natural capacity to heal, given the right conditions to safely and gently come to know our true selves. I hold a supportive container with compassion and experience to allow your highest aspects to come forward and shine.
Sometimes we feel stuck in the same loop, thinking about the same things, making the same decisions. Not sure how to address a conflict? You're not alone, sometimes our anxiety can become overwhelming. I can support you in learning effective coping skills, challenging your thoughts, and changing your thinking patterns to help you reach your goals in the space of therapy.
Is your anxiety productive sometimes? Fears of what others think of you or worrying about letting others down can fuel working long hours, over-preparing, and perfectionist tendencies. However, anxiety can also lead to procrastination, a harsh inner critic, running the tape of past conversations on repeat, over-eating, or troubles sleeping. Sometimes the worries seem endless and the angst leads to physical discomfort, neck/shoulder tension, and stomach pains. Fortunately, research shows CBT can improve anxiety symptoms within 8-12 sessions.
Is your heart suddenly racing, you're breathing fast, and you can hardly think straight? Have these episodes have been increasing as you tell yourself bad things could happen? You're having anxiety almost every day now. I can help you get back in control of that "fight or flight" part of your brain that feels "panicky." Working with clients suffering from anxiety, I provide supportive and educational psychotherapy while --in collaboration with my clients-- introducing them to exposure and response prevention methods. I usually encourage clients to obtain a medical evaluation to consider psychotropic medications, such as serotonergic agents. Integrating methods from CBT, the biological sciences, and humanistic perspectives, as a student of Buddhism, I also offer experience with mindfulness meditation and other contemplative approaches in conjunction with self-compassion in accordance with clients' interests.
Living in a high stress society has increased the amount of anxiety and fear experienced by many. In treating anxiety, I help individuals face fears, build coping skills, and change their perspective on stress.
I know what it is like to struggle with issues like anxiety, and chronic stress. I do not try out things in therapy with you that I have not gone through myself. Anxiety can be such a struggle, feeling like a huge weight that never goes away. But it doesn't have to stop you from living the life you want to live. You don't have to be ruled by your anxiety anymore! We can work together to understand it better, where it is coming from, what it wants, and learn tools and skills to help you work with yourself instead of against yourself.
The anxious mind takes us out of the present moment and into a future narrative that may or may not ever exist. We can learn how to anchor into the present moment again and again.
Using hypnosis I help train your mind to direct the power of your imagination towards relaxation instead of worry. The connections from your mind to your body that can cause physically exhausting reactions to irrational fears or phobias can instead be used to calm your mood, relax your body, and clear your mind.
I enjoy helping clients accept and like themselves, organize around strengths, achieve greater emotional presence, think clearly, and let go of shame, guilt and old habits of emotional survival. I believe therapy should lead to better decisions, as well as improved quality of life and relationships.
