Los Angeles, California therapist: Brooke Taylor, pre-licensed professional
Social Anxiety

Brooke Taylor

Pre-Licensed Professional, MA, AMFT
Social anxiety in teens gets read as shyness, or as rudeness, or as a kid who just doesn't want to try. What's usually happening is more specific: a constant, exhausting sense of being watched and evaluated, and a running tally of everything they might have gotten wrong. Some of it happens hours after the fact, replaying a conversation from lunch. It shows up in the small refusals more than the big ones. Not ordering their own food. Not raising a hand when they know the answer. Skipping the party, then the practice, then the group project. Stomachaches on school mornings. Texting instead of calling, and eventually not doing either. Each avoidance brings relief in the moment and makes the next one harder, and that loop is what tends to shrink a teen's world over time. I work with teens on both halves of it. We look at what's driving the fear, including anything in their history that taught them other people are unsafe to be seen by. And we work practically, at their pace, on moving toward the things they've been avoiding rather than around them, in steps small enough to actually take. My approach is warm and non-pressuring, which matters especially here. A teen with social anxiety is already braced for judgment, and therapy that feels like one more performance will not go anywhere. The aim is that your teen gets to have a normal social life, not a perfectly comfortable one. Nervous and going anyway is the win.
