Marriage and Family Therapist, Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT, MA
OCD can involve intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that feel difficult to control, even when you know they do not make sense. It can take up a lot of mental energy and interfere with your daily life. In therapy we will focus on understanding these patterns and developing ways to respond differently to the thoughts and urges. The goal is to help you feel less controlled by OCD and more able to move through your day with ease.

Growth and Change Counseling

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a control issue that is used to compensate for the fact that a person feels completely out of control. This disorder can have physiological consequences that can cause physical harm and results in lower seratonin levels in the body. As we support you in reducing anxiety and stresses and increasing your sense of control over multiple aspects of your life, you can begin to experience a reduction in your OCD tendencies and/or find it easier to manage them.

I have been training in ERP (exposure response prevention), the gold standard in OCD treatment. Rather than simply talking about it, ERP directly targets the engine that keeps OCD going. Believe it or not, you can learn to face the trigger and not do the compulsion. “I can handle this…and nothing bad happens.” It is very effective and rewarding to see clients with OCD find relief and enjoy life.

Heidi Hartston, Psychologist in Los Angeles, CA
OCD

Heidi Hartston

Psychologist, PhD
I have several decades of experience working with OCD, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, unwanted images, reassurance seeking and relationship OCD. Although it can be a devastating experience and can cause a traumatic level of anxiety, OCD is very responsive to the right specialized treatments. I can help you individually to empower your true wise mind and to quiet the doubting voice. I can also help with families or parents who are navigating how to distinguish helping a child with OCD versus enabling. And I can work with couples where relationship OCD or another type of OCD may be causing a rift. I combine insightful, caring depth work with evidence based techniques like exposure and response prevention (E&RP) and CBT that effectively free you from obsessive-compulsive patterns, and help you to reclaim the balanced, happy life you deserve. Life Coach, view my credentials online at: www.recoveringfromwithin.com/credentialslongform
OCD is interesting in that it could have trauma based origins, physiological origins, including epigenetic, or could be an adaptive response to something that is currently challenging. First is to decipher where the origin is as best as one can, in general an integrative and functional approach may work well, as it could be based in metabolic deficiency, for example. Shared with care: in certain cases, we have witnessed it might evolve in people or communities where power abuse is rampant -- these compulsions can set in as ways to adapt to holding maladaptive and abusive thinking and distracting a person from the inhumanity and incoherence of the abusive thinking they have been groomed to take on. This is not written about from a hegemonic perspective, however decolonizing theory will find these challenges of OCD and even paranoia heightened in people or communities that habituate enacting atrocities. This is not trauma it is an expression of intensive moral injury and benefits from interrupting the moral injury and moving the person into ethical recovery of their humanity. Contrapositively, trauma impactees may show OCD traits as a way of the mind distracting from torture or other forms of recurring harm psychologically (e.g repeated and intensive gaslighting), physically, sexually...etc. Here we would apply a trauma based approach to care along with Havening, Brainspotting and other ways to soothe a nervous system and restore mental networks as best we can/ Please feel free to ask if you have more questions.
