Whether the trauma you experienced is recent, or it comes from a complex family history, it is possible to overcome the negative effects of trauma and find a new way to see life. Using EMDR as a primary model of therapy, we will sort through the experiences in your life that are creating significant issues in your present life. I work with childhood, sexual, emotional, and physical abuse.

As Gabor Mate says: "Trauma is a Greek word for wound. Literally that's what it means. So when you understand that, then you realize...trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you. "Trauma is not the event that inflicted the wound. So, the trauma is not the sexual abuse, the trauma is not the war. Trauma is not the abandonment. The trauma is not the inability of your parents to see you for who you were. Trauma is the wound that you sustained as a result. I have worked with trauma throughout my career and will support you in your healing process. Up to 70% of adults will experience a traumatic event in their lives, sometimes this turns into a PTSD condition. Receiving trauma therapy to assist you on your healing journey can make a big difference. I often combine EMDR and IFS in the trauma work I do with clients and have found many clients respond well to these therapy techniques.

I am a certified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapist through EMDRIA. This is a highly effective type of therapy for people with PTSD and people who have experienced trauma, or have anxiety with or without phobias. Many people are crippled by their vivid memories, overpowering emotions, sensory triggers and physical manifestations of past and/or current trauma. You can heal from a life time of trauma or a one-time traumatic event without having to relive your past experiences.

Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be debilitating conditions that can greatly impact an individual's mental and emotional well-being. Trauma can be caused by a wide range of events such as physical or emotional abuse, accidents, natural disasters, and combat. PTSD is a condition that can develop after a person has been through a traumatic event. As a therapist, I specialize in helping individuals who have experienced trauma and PTSD. I use evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), which have been proven to be effective in treating trauma and PTSD. CBT is a form of therapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their symptoms. TF-CBT is a specific type of CBT that is designed to help individuals who have experienced traumatic events such as sexual abuse. In therapy sessions, we will work together to understand the underlying causes of your trauma and PTSD and develop strategies to manage your symptoms. We will also work on building resilience and coping skills to help you navigate through the challenges that you may face. Trauma and PTSD can be difficult and overwhelming, but with the right support, it is possible to heal and move forward. I am here to help you navigate this process, and I encourage you to reach out for help.

Much of the therapy I provided in the inpatient setting was dealing with trauma during the developmental years. I found myself later working with some forty persons impacted by the Oklahoma City bombing on an outpatient basis. Fortunately, I was able to do specialized training with Green Cross mentioned above in providing treatment for trauma & PTSD (I prefer the term Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome versus) because, as Viktor Frankl said, "Abnormal reactions to abnormal events equals normal behavior." I have PTSS as a result of childhood trauma, for which I received treatment in years past and have learned to manage constructively.

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, CAS, MA, EMDR
I specialize in helping people who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events, process those events, and get back to living a life that they were living before the event occurred. I have specialized training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which is a very powerful technique that helps you use your own brain's potential to reprocess upsetting events. While not everyone who has trauma has PTSD, many times the two do go hand in hand. There is always hope and facing what you've experienced instead of ignoring it is the first step to regaining your sense of safety.

Horses are well-suited for the therapy environment because of their natural instincts and communication methods. While humans can speak, explain, and rationalize thoughts, horses live in an entirely action-based social structure. This works well in therapy because in action-based exercises you must change your actions to change your results—horses don’t question your motives, they react to the actions you take. Their hyper-vigilance and heavy reliance on body language is also a large part of the counseling process. Horses are significantly more aware of body language than humans and more readily recognize and react to levels of anger, anxiety, fear, or sadness that are imperceptible to humans. This provides real-time feedback for the participant and the therapist. There is no magic or mystery as to the use of horses in therapy. They’re therapy partners that simply have the natural perception, response, and inclination to allow participants to try new communication strategies.
