Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LPC, LCSW, LMFT, CSAT
Trauma can affect every person differently, often showing up as anxiety, emotional overwhelm, difficulty trusting others, intrusive memories, or patterns that feel hard to break. Recognizing the lasting effects of distressing experiences is often the first step toward healing. At Ignite Counseling Colorado, we use evidence-based trauma therapies tailored to your unique needs and healing process. Our trauma treatment approaches include: - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): A structured therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they feel less emotionally overwhelming and disruptive. - Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): An approach that combines cognitive and behavioral strategies to help process trauma and build healthier coping skills. - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT helps you develop psychological flexibility by learning to respond to difficult thoughts and emotions with greater acceptance and intention. - Internal Family Systems (IFS): IFS helps you understand and heal the different parts of yourself that may carry the pain, protection, or emotional burdens created by trauma. Our goal is to help you move beyond survival mode, process unresolved pain, and create lasting healing and resilience.

Denver Wellness Counseling

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC
Here at Denver Wellness Counseling we specialize in EMDR and trauma/PTSD counseling. Our therapists have achieved advanced training in what we call Elevated EMDR, meaning the ability to effectively combine modalities and adapt the EMDR basic protocol to best meet the needs of the client. Therapy for Trauma and PTSD have some primary components, including (but not limited to), gathering history, identifying parts of self related to the trauma (wounded younger parts and protector parts), building and practicing skills for self-regulation and self-soothing, resourcing by strengthening internal qualities and sources of positive affect, reprocessing traumatic memories (EMDR), and integrating adaptive themes and positive messages about self and the world. Traumatic memories are stored differently in the brain, remaining in their "raw" form, in isolation from our adaptive (helpful) information, and able to impact our day-to-day experiences. With PTSD, our traumatic memories can frequently cause us to flash back into trauma-related thoughts, feelings, sensation, and action urges (fight, flight, freeze, submit, cry for help). EMDR uses eye movements or other bilateral sensations (similar to those found in REM sleep) to activate and encourage the brains natural ability to "reprocess" memories, which can both desensitize the memory (take the intensity out) and allow integration with the more adaptive neural circuitry. This process of emotional reprocessing can thus take the power away from these memories so they stop replaying and impacting our current functioning.

Arvada, Colorado therapist: Danielle Martinelli-Taylor, licensed professional counselor
PTSD/Trauma

Danielle Martinelli-Taylor

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC, EMDRIA
EMDR and ART are specifically designed to work with the deep-seated trauma that is stored in the body. Trauma breaks, and these methods are designed for your brain to find the means to mend. The wounds from childhood abuse, trauma, or disruption of attachment lead the mind and body to act in old ways that can feel out of your control. Using these steps can help reprocess those old mentalities to engage with the people and situations in the present in a grounded and present way.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
PTSD/Trauma

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
For more than 33 years, I’ve worked with adults whose lives have been shaped by experiences that were overwhelming, prolonged, or carried alone for a long time. Many are thoughtful, highly responsible people who have learned to keep going, even when something inside feels stuck, numb, or on edge. This often includes early family dynamics that were never named as “trauma,” but still live in your body and relationships. When these kinds of experiences are ongoing or rooted in early life, they are often described as complex trauma, C‑PTSD, or developmental trauma. Difficult or frightening experiences can also arise from single incidents or periods of crisis, such as medical trauma, accidents, or other shocks. These experiences may or may not meet criteria for PTSD, but they can still leave a lasting imprint. These experiences can influence how you understand yourself, how you move through relationships, and how your nervous system responds to daily life. You may notice changes in mood, concentration, or energy. Some people feel constantly on alert, others shut down, and many move between the two. For some, there is a clear “before and after” in their life; for others, there is a quieter sense of having experienced more than most people realize. In our work together, we focus on building safety and softening the impact of trauma, including PTSD and C‑PTSD, on your daily life. We pay close attention to how it impacts your body, nervous system, and relationships and to the patterns and roles that once helped you cope but may now feel limiting or costly. We move at a pace that respects your capacity and what feels possible right now, with an emphasis on choice and partnership throughout the process.

"Trauma is Trauma!" It is a belief that the client is the one that gets to define the situations that they feel have been impactful and have changed the course of their life. Using Trauma Focused-CBT, we will work side by side in helping to go through the trauma in a narrative fashion. This will be done only after building trust and using psychoeducation for a more thorough understanding of the impacts on trauma no matter what age it has occurred. It takes time to heal, but these are things that happened and do not have to hold you back anymore. Let's start the process of healing for you.
