I have worked extensively with clients who are living with cancer and other chronic illnesses. Learning to live with a chronic illness can be overwhelming. Hannah Shevitz

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPCMH, NCC, M.S.
Feeling stuck or weighed down? Most people are, even if they do not talk about it. Our bodies hold so many of our experiences. Years of stress, hurt, and simply trying to keep everything together can leave you exhausted, anxious, or dealing with chronic or autoimmune issues that seem to appear out of nowhere. When the pain is invisible, people often assume you are fine. Meanwhile you might be people pleasing, staying overly busy, shutting down, or finding little ways to escape because it feels like the only thing that helps. Chronic illness touches everything. Your mood. Your sense of self. Your relationships. It can make you feel alone even when you are not. Living with autoimmune issues myself has taught me how closely the mind and body are connected. It is frustrating when your body will not cooperate, when symptoms flare without warning, and when you feel like you have to keep explaining something no one else can see. This is the work I do with people. I help individuals move through attachment wounds, relationship trauma, chronic illness, and sexual health concerns in a way that makes room for the whole person. We pay attention to what your body is holding, the patterns you learned to survive, and the ways your past still shows up in your nervous system. We start to slowly release what has been sitting inside you for a long time. I use EMDR, parts work, mindfulness, and CBT, but what matters most is that you feel met and understood. If you have ever wondered why resting feels so hard, why connection feels complicated, or why you do not always feel at home in your own body, therapy can help you understand yourself in a new way. Healing is not about fixing you. It is about finding your way back to yourself with more care and softness. If you feel curious about starting, I am here.

Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Chronic Pain or Illness

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.
