Postpartum Depression

Dr Hannah Levy, Clinical Psychologist

Psychologist, DClinPsy, BSc
You thought that becoming a parent would be exciting, but you've also felt overwhelmed, anxious and like you’re struggling to cope. There's been an expectation that you'd be happy and even ‘glowing’ but the reality has often felt very different. It has left you wondering if you’re failing or 'not doing it right' which can make it hard to say you're not OK or ask for help. If this feels like you, please know that you are not alone and that these thoughts and feelings are very common, even if they’re not often talked about. As a Clinical Psychologist specialising in parental and perinatal wellbeing, I can support you as you adjust to becoming a parent, whether this is during pregnancy, after your baby is born, following a traumatic birth or when your baby has additional health needs or has required neonatal care. I also offer bereavement support when a baby has sadly died. Asking for professional support when things feel difficult can feel scary and uncomfortable. I hope you'll find I offer a supportive, warm, friendly and non-judgment approach. Please feel you can contact me to arrange a free 15 minute telephone call so we can discuss how I can help. I believe postpartum depression is still depression and can still be worked with in the usual way but not how the usual blurb and old fashioned thinking is programmed to do. Like usual depression long or short term it is not a disease it is a process that has been ambushed.

As with any form of depression we can understand its cause and its manifestation at many levels. In the case of postpartum depression there is a combination of a chemical malfunction in the brain probably caused by hormonal imbalance and the overwhelming experience of bonding with and being responsible for a new and helpless human being. I know from working with patients suffering from this horrible condition that the level of despair is immense. I can only say that this is a condition that responds well to treatment. Seeing patients respond to this treatment and becoming loving functional parents is one of the most rewarding experiences a psychologist can have.

I believe every woman will experience low moods after having a baby, resting for 40 days post baby can have life long benefits for both mother and baby. Making a structured plan to care for yourself in turn cares for your baby, providing strong bonds and less anxiety.
