Childhood and adolescence are the years of most rapid development - physical, mental, emotional, and social. These are periods of great opportunity but also of significant vulnerability - adversities in childhood and adolescence can lead to longer-term difficulties and a compromised quality of life. It is therefore important for problems, including those encompassing a child, or a young person's mental health, to be addressed in a timely manner. I work predominantly with teenagers, young adults and parents. For people who have not yet turned 18, written parental consent to access therapy, will be required. Edinburgh, Scotland therapist: Claire de la Varre, therapist
Child/Teen

Claire de la Varre

Therapist, PhD, HGDipP
Children and teens react to stress or trauma in a variety of ways. School grades might drop. The child could procrastinate, have memory problems, or become distracted, self-critical, perfectionist, irritable, depressed, anxious, or violent. They might sleep too much or too little, have headaches or stomach problems, disordered eating, panic attacks or develop habits like hair-pulling or biting their nails. Teens might be sullen and uncommunicative and turn to potentially addictive behaviours like drinking or drugs, video games or pornography, to manage their stress. They may also turn to influencers and may take on new and disturbing belief systems. If the child or teen is worried about their own behaviour or ability to manage complex situations, and is looking for help, then therapy offers a chance to learn more appropriate coping skills to use in daily life. At the first session, I will listen to your concerns and those of your child to get an overview of the situation. For younger kids, it is often not necessary to explain in detail that they are going for "therapy." You could simply say that they will be having a relaxed and quiet time in which they will listen to stories and use their imagination to solve their problems.

Sudeva Hawkes

Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Clinical Counsellor, B.Couns., MNCPS Accred. , PACFA Reg.
My aimis to create a protected space where teens (over 13) can explore whatever is going on for them, without feeling judged or that they are expected to perform in some way. I combine clinical experience with with meditation and mindfulness to give the young people I work with something special, the opportunity to find their own sense of direction in the company of a supportive ally, eliminating that which is no longer relevant in their lives while developing new strengths.

Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk and a growing commercial centre, with a diversifying economy that includes financial services, digital industries, and the port sector. Mental health services in the county are provided by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, which has faced sustained regulatory scrutiny, making access to timely NHS care difficult and driving many residents toward private therapy as the primary route to support. The University of Suffolk in Ipswich provides counselling services for students and contributes to the local supply of trained therapists through its psychology and counselling programmes. Common therapy concerns include anxiety, depression, workplace stress, and the challenges of semi-rural isolation for those across the broader Suffolk area who travel to Ipswich for services.
