Personality disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterised by enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that significantly deviate from cultural expectations. These patterns usually emerge in adolescence or early adulthood, are inflexible, and cause distress or significant impairment in social, occupational, and personal functioning. Core Characteristics Pervasive & Inflexible: Thoughts, emotional responses, and behaviours remain rigid and consistent across a wide range of personal and social situations. Distorted Self-Image and Relational Patterns: A person's perception of themselves, others, and events is often distorted, often leading to intense, unstable, or difficult interpersonal relationships. Emotional Regulation Challenges: Many personality disorders involve intense emotional swings, high impulsivity, or profound difficulty managing distress. Understanding the Clusters Clinicians generally group personality disorders into three distinct categories (clusters) based on shared symptoms and characteristics: Cluster A (Odd or Eccentric): Includes Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal personality disorders. Individuals often display peculiar or unusual behaviours, social detachment, and distorted ways of thinking. Cluster B (Dramatic, Emotional, or Erratic): Includes Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, and Narcissistic personality disorders. Individuals often struggle to regulate emotions, control impulses, and maintain stable self-esteem or relationships. Cluster C (Anxious or Fearful): Includes Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive personality disorders. Individuals frequently experience chronic anxiety, deep-seated fears of rejection, or an excessive need for control and perfection. Treatment and Outlook While personality disorders can be complex and deeply ingrained, they are treatable. Specialised psychotherapy—such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)—along with supportive psychiatric care, can help individuals develop healthier coping mechanisms, build stable relationships, and improve their quality of life. Remember: A personality disorder describes patterns of behaviour and thought, not who a person is at their core. With patience, self-awareness, and professional guidance, meaningful growth and healing are possible.

We work from a parts perspective and meld in understanding of power dynamics and neuorbiological expressions of behaviors, traits and states to discern the depth of the qualities being expressed. We may look holistically and in an integrative way at the internal and relational process. It may be collaborative to supplement our work with integrative health approaches, such as neurofeedback/biofeedback and dietary and lifestyle changes to support neuroplasticity and more easeful ventral state access. As stated above, we also employ functional health support for NPD, BPD, Bipolar, some alexithymic based expressions...

Therapy with Ben

Counsellor/Therapist, MBACP
I can work with people who have been diagnosed with a personality disorder, or who are exploring related difficulties with emotions, identity and relationships. I approach these experiences without judgement and do not reduce anyone to a diagnostic label. I do not provide psychiatric assessment or diagnosis; where specialist assessment or support would better meet your needs, I will discuss an appropriate referral with you.

Registered Psychotherapist, Psychodynamic Analysis & Transactional Analysis, PACFA, BACP, ITTA, EATA, UKATA
Personality disorder diagnoses can feel stigmatising, but underneath the label are patterns that developed for real reasons, usually early in life. I work with clients to understand those patterns without judgement and build new, more flexible ways of relating to themselves and others, and making the underlying script visible.
