Self-esteem is the overall opinion of ourselves; our beliefs about our abilities and limitations. Self-esteem is shaped by our thoughts, relationships, and experiences. Many beliefs we hold about ourselves today reflect messages we've received from others over time. Healthy self-esteem contributes to feelings of worth and security. If we have healthy self-esteem, we are more likely to have positive relationships with others and we are confident in our abilities and choices. Some of the traits of low self-esteem are negative feelings about ourselves, or being overly critical. This in turn can produce depression, anxiety or shame. Low-self esteem can also cause relationship problems. For example, one may have the tendency to tolerate inappropriate behaviors form their partner, or feel that they are not loveable. Fear of being judged by other people may also be an issue, along with a lack of self-care of self-harming behaviors. Often low-self esteem comes from the way we were raised in our family of origin such as abuse, excessive criticism, demeaning behaviors and neglect. It can also be caused by current relationships and circumstances. If you are struggling with low-self esteem, which is causing a host of other issues please reach out to me. We can work through the core issues and help you form a more positive view of yourself filled with confidence and security in your abilities.

Self-esteem is a widely misunderstood concept. I often feel that enhancing an individual's self-efficacy (their perception of their competence) can be a much more effective approach to building self-esteem than other treatment models. If you feel you may experience poor self-esteem, please contact me.
