Alexis Cabrera (She/Her)

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPCC, LMHC, LPC
I am engaged and alert with my clients. I support your growth while Frustrating your defenses- I work to confront my clients in their blind spots, because (as a New Yorker) I understand that speaking from a place of love may not always mean people-pleasing. But with the warmth of my Californian identity, I work to be fluid and flexible, using somatic interventions to develop and cathart Embodied Trauma. Sometimes the history lives in the present.

Treatment Approach

  • Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Gestalt Therapy Encourages awareness of thoughts, feelings, and actions in the present moment. It helps people integrate different parts of themselves for wholeness.
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy Based on decades of research, this method gives couples tools to improve communication, manage conflict, and strengthen intimacy.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) Helps clients heal by working with different ‘parts’ of themselves, like inner critics or wounded children. It fosters harmony within the self.
  • Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
  • Object Relations Therapy Focuses on how early caregiver relationships shape current relationships. It aims to improve patterns of attachment and trust.
  • Psychodrama A group therapy that uses role-play and dramatization to process emotions. It helps clients gain perspective and release tension.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
  • Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.
  • Somatic Therapy Helps clients notice how emotions are stored in the body. It uses breath, movement, and awareness for healing trauma and stress.
Approach Description: What works best for you? I meet you, we feel each other out, do you like homework? Are you open to physical experiment? Do you need in person? Are you trying to get your partner to join you? Shall I hold you accountable to actions? I start with a full intake, and then we construct a treatment plan, so we are both on the same page with your evolution. We evaluate these goals after 3-6 months- wow you're sober! Now shall we tackle your family?

Alexis Cabrera Practice Description
My private practice has morphed over the course of 12 years. I see people out of pocket in New York and Florida, and have also seen out-of-pocket clients in Europe, Mexico, and India. I see minors with consent, I also see (and LOVE) to work with couples and family systems. I collaborate with psychiatrists and am happy to work alongside a team you already have to facilitate what works for YOU. I also supervise interns based in New York and California, as well as graduate therapists, providing CBT/DBT/Racial Relations/Gestalt intervention training to other baby therapists-in-training. My practice incorporates a lifetime of tools I have gathered from various trainings and workshops over the years- three years of Gestalt at the Gestalt Institute, an extended specialization from Teacher's College at Columbia University in Race Relations, Assertive Communication Modules in Brooklyn for couples dynamics, as well as substance abuse courses, Freud/Jungian Conferences, holistic alternatives, Outro's tapering protocols for psychiatric medication, administrative negotiations with schoolboards for family treatment, and deposition evaluations for lawsuits. I have written and advocated for queer clients undergoing (successful!) transitions in the medical frontiers, various ESA/Service animal letters for the furry allies in my practice (I have one myself- let's go Chikki Minaj the Pomeranian), and assisted immigrants with support in refuge in the collapsing American status system. I have personally participated in twelve step programs, I am an Ecuadorian with immigrant grandparents, my aunts were born in other countries and came here to have safety of their own. I have had loved ones die and integrated the intimacy of death as the REAL continuing education, and I use self-disclosure sparingly but with importance. I am not your boss and I don't want to be. I offer free consultations and sliding scale rates, with superbills available for out-of-network clients. I am also credentialed with many insurances in California.
