Trauma and PTSD

Elaine Skoulas

Marriage and Family Therapist, M.A., LMFT
Trauma can shape how you think, feel, relate, and respond to the world, often long after the original events have passed. Whether rooted in childhood experiences, relational wounds, or overwhelming life events, trauma can leave the nervous system stuck in patterns of alertness, shutdown, or emotional reactivity. I integrate EMDR and Somatic Experiencing to help the nervous system process these experiences safely so you can feel more present, empowered, and connected in your life.

I am engaged and alert with my clients. I support your growth while Frustrating your defenses- I work to confront my clients in their blind spots, because (as a New Yorker) I understand that speaking from a place of love may not always mean people-pleasing. But with the warmth of my California Licensure (c;) I work to be fluid and flexible, using somatic interventions to develop and cathart Embodied Trauma. Sometimes the history lives in the present.

Los Angeles, California therapist: Mia Turner, therapist
Trauma and PTSD

Mia Turner

Therapist, MA, RYT, ASDCS, LMFT, NPT-C, CMNCS, CMIP
Specialized support for trauma, complex trauma (C-PTSD), developmental trauma, attachment trauma, racial trauma, medical trauma, religious trauma, identity-based trauma, intergenerational trauma, and the impacts of systemic oppression, marginalization, and chronic invalidation. This work is particularly attuned to the experiences of neurodivergent, disabled, chronically ill, LGBTQIA2S+, BIPOC, multicultural, and other multiply marginalized individuals whose trauma often exists at the intersection of personal experiences and larger social systems. My approach integrates EMDR, somatic therapy, polyvagal-informed practices, mindfulness, parts work, expressive arts, neuropsychotherapy, attachment-focused work, and liberation-oriented healing. Rather than asking what is wrong with you, we explore what happened to you, what happened around you, what happened within you, and the ways your nervous system, body, relationships, and sense of self adapted in order to survive. Trauma often lives far beyond conscious memory. It is carried in the nervous system, muscles, breath, sensory experiences, patterns of tension, hypervigilance, perfectionism, people-pleasing, over-functioning, shutdown, dissociation, emotional overwhelm, chronic self-monitoring, difficulty resting, difficulty trusting, or a persistent feeling of being disconnected from yourself, your body, or your needs. Many of these responses reflect the intelligence of a system that learned how to survive under difficult circumstances rather than evidence that something is wrong with you. This work invites a deeper understanding of the body's role in both survival and healing. Through attention to sensation, emotion, movement, breath, imagery, nervous system states, and the wisdom held by different parts of self, space is created for greater regulation, flexibility, self-compassion, and choice. Healing is not approached as fixing, erasing, or becoming someone different, but as gently reconnecting with the parts of yourself that may have been hidden beneath protection, adaptation, or survival. As a multiply marginalized clinician whose work is informed by both professional expertise and lived understanding of trauma, culture, gender, neurodivergence, disability, chronic illness, and systemic oppression, I recognize that healing is rarely about symptom reduction alone. It is often about reclaiming connection to your body, your voice, your needs, your culture, your values, your relationships, your joy, your interests, your communities, and your capacity to move through life with greater authenticity, agency, and self-trust. The goal is not to return to who you were before trauma, but connecting with safe-enough states and reclaiming connection to self, community, embodiment, joy, agency, and the parts of you that existed long before survival became necessary.

Erika Shershun

Marriage and Family Therapist, MA, LMFT
I haven't met a client who couldn't benefit from some degree of healing from trauma, whether relational, developmental, systemic, big T, complex trauma, PTSD... we all carry trauma in varying degrees until we're able to integrate it. My work is trauma informed, with a foundation in somatic psychotherapy which is needed for lasting results - trauma impacts the body as well as the brain. If you ignore the body in therapy the thoughts and emotions may improve for a time, but the patterns of constriction that impact the body will remain and sooner or later the distressing thoughts and emotions will return. I also draw on EMDR, neurobiology, energy psychology, self-compassion, mindfulness and other modalities. My work is compassionate yet direct and results driven.

We bring 14+ years of experience with complex trauma, dissociation care and recovery, memory reconsolidation and other neurodevelopmental care, attachmemt care and support... We specialize in CSAS - Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Colonial and/or Narcissistic/Trauma Recovery. Our approach is systems and neurodevelopmental and at times ethnotraditional/ecorelational based. We bring compassion and empathy to trauma recovery support. There is a deep understanding of the internal and external affects of trauma recovery. Care providers are sometimes also survivors who have been through the recovery and have deep compassion for the process. We look at and work with intersectional issues of oppression. We also recognize many instances of socially derived trauma are intergenerational, lateralized and or oppressive and ongoing, clients are often addressing childhood, as well as, adult trauma from a non-self-shaming compassion based approach such as, Intersectional Care, Parts Work including TIST -- Trauma Informed Stabilization Theory, IFS -- Internal Family Systems; Somatic Work and distance CranioSacral; DBR, Polyvagal and Attachment Theory based approaches... non dominant handwriting, addiction care, memory reconsolidation and existential/coherence level care. We also integrate understanding of Transformative and Social Justice to bring awareness to internalized oppression that can keep survivors looped into dangerous experiences. We have a decolonizing orientation to care! This work is a special calling, during and post trauma recovery, folks may even feel more affirmed and move towards creative and fulfilling Self actualization in their process. Los Angeles, California therapist: Heidi Hartston, psychologist
Trauma and PTSD

Heidi Hartston

Psychologist, PhD
A traumatic experience can reset your nervous system to be chronically hyper-vigilant as if another dangerous situation is right around the corner. Chronic hypervigilance can have you on guard all the time, over-reactive, easily offended or startled, sleep deprived and feeling alone and unsupported. It is exhausting and unsustainable to live that way. And it can shut down your creativity, playfullness, relationships and physical health too. I can work with you to process trauma, anger and grief. And I can help you learn to ease your nervous system back into a more relaxed state. I combine insightful, caring depth work with evidence based techniques that effectively free you from past traumas, self-sabotaging patterns, and help you to build the balanced, happy life you deserve.

Sacramento, California therapist: Stephanie Brumfield, therapist
Trauma and PTSD

Stephanie Brumfield

Therapist, LCSW
In navigating the healing journey from trauma and PTSD, my practice honors the profound insight that healing transcends the physical and psychological realms, reaching deep into the spiritual fabric of our being. Guided by Peter Levine's understanding that trauma's impact is less about the events themselves and more about what we hold inside without an empathetic witness, I integrate a spiritual lens that enriches the therapeutic process. This approach is not only about storytelling and witnessing but also involves the sacred work of soul retrieval—reclaiming the pieces of the self that were lost or disassociated in the wake of traumatic experiences. Specializing in childhood trauma, complex trauma, and PTSD, I offer a compassionate, spiritually informed space where individuals can explore and articulate their deepest wounds and embark on a path of profound transformation. This journey is about giving voice to the inner child's silenced pain and facilitating soul retrieval, which empowers healing at the most integral levels of one's being. By incorporating spiritual practices and perspectives, I help clients connect with their inner wisdom and the universal energies that support their healing process. For parents navigating the dual challenges of healing their trauma while breaking cycles of pain, my approach provides not just therapeutic support but spiritual guidance, aiding them in reparenting themselves and fostering a healing environment for their families. Echoing Maya Angelou's words on the agony of untold stories, my aim is to ensure these stories are not only heard but deeply seen through a spiritual lens, facilitating a healing process that leads to liberation, soul retrieval, and a reconnection with one's authentic self. This holistic, spiritually enriched approach invites individuals to reclaim their story, their spirit, and their path forward, embodying resilience and renewal.

Los Angeles has one of the highest concentrations of therapists in the United States, with a culture that broadly embraces personal growth, self-development, and long-term therapeutic work. The entertainment industry generates distinct demand for therapists who understand performance anxiety, identity, the psychological pressures of creative careers, and the particular challenges of fame and public scrutiny. LA's extraordinary diversity means therapists fluent in Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, Farsi, Armenian, and Tagalog are all abundant, making culturally matched care particularly accessible.
