Human beings naturally attach to feel safe and loved in a way that is familiar. We often have attachment styles that are related to childhood family dynamics and unhealed wounds. We need to get to the root of how we love and how we want to be loved to heal.
With codependency, much of the focus is on how one learned how to be in relationships with others to understand early dynamics and better approach current relationships. As well, learning how to disentangle one's natural need for validation from another helps to empower and grow one's own sense of agency and power. Codependency has become a negative buzzword, however codependency when thoughtfully applied, managed and assessed can be constructive and vital to healthy relationships.
