I am a certified addictions counselor and welcome clients who are in active recovery, are questioning their relationship with substances, or would like to decrease current use of substances. I have knowledge of the disease model of addiction, 12-Step language, and the impact of substance abuse on family systems. I welcome clients along the spectrum of use: from questioning/examining consequences to complete abstinence if that is the goal.

Addiction is problem that affects individuals, their families, and friends. However, many addicts deny that they have a problem and refuse to seek help. In some cases, the family finds itself unable to help. In our sessions we first assist the addict and then when possible, the family. Individual counseling is confidential and personal and involves the counselor meeting face to face with the addict to discuss recovery.

Dr. Walter J. Matweychuk
Psychologist, Ph.D.
I have written a book Overcoming Your Addictions which shows you how to apply the principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy and CBT to your self-defeating addictions. To overcome an addiction you first need to learn to accept yourself unconditionally with your addiction. Your self-defeating addictive behavior does not diminish your worth as a person. Putting yourself down will not help you overcome your addiction. Secondly, you need to learn to build your discomfort tolerance for urges, develop a healthy network of friends who will not lead you back to your addiction, and a vitally absorbing interest in life that makes your life meaningful.
