Trauma and PTSD

Mr. Dan Pugel

Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other types of trauma occur circumstantially and can often be debilitating and often seem insurmountable. A person suffering with PTSD has experienced or has been a witness to a traumatic event where a threat of death or serious injury occurs to self or others. During the experience or observing of such trauma the individual senses "intense fear, helplessness or horror". PTSD symptoms may include voluntary and involuntary recurrent thoughts and dreams about the event, intense associations with the event - both externally and internally, intentional avoidance of associations with event, isolation, loss of interest in activities, anger, loss of concentration sleep disruptions among others. (DSM-V) Other trauma occurs that may not be as pervasive as PTSD yet still interfers with the healthy social, occupational and general functioning of daily life. Both are experiences that can be processed through with outcomes of growth and healing

Trauma and PTSD

Lauren Rothstein

Psychologist, Ph.D.
In working with Trauma and PTSD, I employ a trauma-informed and patient-centered approach. This involves creating a safe therapeutic space where individuals can explore and process their traumatic experiences. Techniques such as Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Written Exposure Therapy (WET), Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) may be used to address symptoms and promote healing. The focus is on helping individuals regain a sense of control, manage triggers, address avoidance, and work towards building a foundation for long-term recovery.

Trauma is the experience not just of what happened to us, but by how our bodies, neurology, and hearts respond to what happened to us. Traumas of 'small t' and traumas of 'big T' both create adaptions to our true selves that can lead in our being 'stuck' in ways that don't serve us, that may create more trauma, or disconnection from our true selves and to our relationships with others. We have multiple ways of healing trauma, including complex traumas, including Flash Therapy, EMDR, hypnosis, somatic work, art therapy and more. Coming back to your true self, perhaps for the first time, is not a journey to be missed.
