Lorna Barnes, Oak Tree Counselling

Licensed Professional Counsellor, CT, CPC
I love to work with parents who are struggling to parent their children. We'll look for patterns that come from root issues that may be impeding clients' ability to parent. Psychoeducation is important in this area so new skills can be developed. I supply parenting resources and believe the connection and attachment we develop with our children early in their lives creates a calm well adjusted child.

Lincoln Stoller

Counsellor/Therapist, PhD, CHt, CCPCP
My approach to parenting may be unusual for many people in modern, Western cultures as it comes from a more traditional, growth oriented approach. I was raised in a modern, Euro-centric culture whose conformist, material values are not oriented toward community, family, or the individual. As a psychotherapist, I've noted that most of my clients struggled with a lack of parental support. This is true for both clients who come with problems and those approaching new opportunities. From these clients and my own experience as child and parent, I feel parents are responsible for their children's material and spiritual growth. To play this role, a parent needs to be materially supportive, empathetic, understanding, aware and, most of all, have their own spiritual values. My prescription for successful parenting is simple: be a positive role model in all regards. Once you have accomplished this, or are working to do so, you can address the problems you children may have. In most cases, or perhaps all cases, their problems will direct you to their solutions, which is to say solutions that are pertinent for them. It is possible, but it is rare, that how you conceive of their problems, and what you envisage as the solution to them, may be correct. It is more likely that you're wrong, and that finding the right answers will take patience and effort. Showing that you understand this is a lesson in itself. As a parent, you are basically a therapist whose payment is fulfilling your obligation and winning your children's gratitude; not their future gratitude but their present gratitude. If you are not appreciated, then you probably are not helpful. Whether you are succeeding or failing, you must remain committed to helping them find solutions. Like a therapist, you know very little compared to the complexity of the situations with which you are presented. You are obliged to provide energy, resources, encouragement, guidance, and protection. Your sincere advice is only as useful as it is appropriate, and even then it is likely mistaken. You have to know how to operate with responsibility but limited authority. Being a parent is not a privilege, it is an honor. You are called to play a role in your child's success or failure. You are not responsible for their success, but should take responsibility for their failures because you should understand the value of failure better than they do. Most parents fail because they are not fully committed to being parents in the full sense of the word. What that means will to be determined by what your child thinks and feels. You are their counselor, you are at their service, and you must listen to them. As with moral virtue, you simply do your best.

Registered Psychotherapist, RP, BA, LLB, CSAT
The process of raising children can be fraught with questions, uncertainty and it can bring up parts of ourselves that we didn't know were there or that we had promised ourselves we would never let come out with our own children. We try to balance protection, care and responsiveness and sometimes we lack support, knowledge or positive examples of how to have the kind of parent-child relationship we desire. I have four children of my own and can relate. I am here to help you connect the dots, weigh the issues, process your past and family or origin traits to come into the role of parent in a way that feels grounded, positive and authentically you.
