Ithaca, New York therapist: Mary Gale Gurnsey, marriage and family therapist
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Mary Gale Gurnsey

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
I became passionate about this work because I've witnessed how deeply relationship trauma affects people's ability to trust themselves and others. Many of my clients come in feeling lost, unsure of what healthy actually looks like, and carrying the weight of past relationships where they lost their sense of self. What I love most is helping people recognize that they're not broken — they're responding logically to what they've experienced. By understanding your attachment patterns and past dynamics, we can build a different future. My goal is to help you feel secure in yourself while building relationships where you're truly valued as an equal partner. I believe therapy should be collaborative, non-judgmental, and respectful of your pace.

New York City, New York therapist: Dr. Erica Gardner-Schuster, psychologist
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dr. Erica Gardner-Schuster

Psychologist, PhD
I am a specialized trauma- & attachment-oriented group therapist committed to helping adults heal, grow and cultivate more fulfilling relationships and lives. In my groups, healing happens in the context of a safe therapeutic community of fellow travelers who can relate, help each other feel less alone, and support one another in making the changes needed to get more out of life. I also use a liberation psychology lens to help group members explore the intersection of cultural and identify factors and mental health and feel more confident and empowered in their lives. Group therapy can help you find deeper meaning and connection through the practice of authenticity: "letting go of who we think we're supposed to be and embracing who we are" (Brené Brown). By helping you bring your full authentic self into connection, Group can help you transcend loneliness to find more fulfilling relationships. Group can help you lean into your life with more courage, compassion and vulnerability. Group can support your unique journey as you find your way home to where you belong, and to the relationships that sustain you.

Clifton, New Jersey therapist: Dr. Mike Abrams, psychologist
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dr. Mike Abrams

Psychologist, PhD, MBA, ABPP
I limit my practice to a few clients with whom I can offer meaningful help. I do not think it is ethical for a psychologist to agree to work with someone who has a problem outside of their expertise or someone who has barriers that the psychologist suspects they cannot overcome. When I conclude that I can help someone, I collaborate with them while applying the most appropriate methods for their problems. I choose these methods from among the many I have studied or developed. This is sometimes called a Transdiagnostic Integrative technique. Here, a clinical label or diagnosis is less important than the unique collection of symptoms a person is living with. I also make sure that I come to understand the client's point of view, how their adversities, their personal philosophy, and their level of suffering combine to lead to their anxiety, depressed mood, or even anger. When the client agrees, I prefer to use psychological testing to be sure my assessment of the client's situation is supported by the best available science. When I conduct psychotherapy, I know it can only be effective when I view the client as presenting many intricate problems that must be fully understood, so each client's issues are approached as scientific hypotheses that guide therapy, which guide my specific interventions, but is always open to revision as new life history information or psychological data becomes available. Since I have trained numerous therapists and continue researching and publishing in the field, my clients are assured they receiving the most effective evidence-based interventions. If you do see me, you can be confident that you will be unconditionally accepted in a safe and comfortable therapeutic relationship with every effort being made to help you.

When we bring compassion, curiosity, and courage into how we relate to ourselves, it opens space to understand our emotions more deeply, trust our inner voice, and move toward a life that feels more aligned.
