Traumatic experiences can be singular or chronic. Often individuals feel the term trauma is only reserved for catastrophic experiences such as natural disasters, veteran's experiences, accidents, etc. More often than not, trauma can be the result of cumulative experiences throughout one's childhood and beyond (e.g. lack of safety, abuse, neglect, interpersonal violence as an adult, etc). PTSD is one's response to one or multiple traumas and can manifest as nightmares, intrusive re-experiencing of past traumatic event(s), hypervigilance, memory loss, exaggerated startle response, periods of dissociation, and more.
