Peter Linden
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, Certified Gestalt Therapist
ADHD is often described through a medical model that frames difference as deficit and neurodivergence as pathology. In doing so, it reduces a rich, complex, and deeply human way of being in the world to a collection of symptoms requiring treatment. Such perspectives frequently overlook the relationship between person and environment, as well as the emotional, relational, cultural, and existential consequences of living in a world that misunderstands, rejects, or fails to support neurodivergent ways of being.
For many people, the deepest suffering associated with ADHD does not arise from ADHD itself, but from repeatedly encountering environments that insist they should think differently, move differently, learn differently, relate differently, or be someone other than who they are. Over time, these experiences can give rise to shame, loneliness, frustration, grief, anxiety, self-doubt, exhaustion, relational difficulties, and a painful sense of not belonging. One may begin to question their worth, mistrust their experience, or lose contact with aspects of themselves in an effort to gain acceptance, safety, or connection.
As a Gestalt psychotherapist, I do not view ADHD as something broken that needs to be fixed, cured, or corrected. Rather, I understand ADHD as a unique way of organizing experience, making contact with the world, processing information, directing attention, and responding to one's environment. Together, we explore your lived experience with curiosity, respect, and compassion, attending to thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, relational patterns, strengths, needs, longings, and aspirations as they emerge in the present moment.
Through deepening awareness, many people develop a more authentic relationship with themselves, greater trust in their experience, and an increased capacity to advocate for their needs and live according to their values. The goal is not to become someone else. It is to cultivate the awareness, self-support, and freedom necessary to live more fully as yourself in a world that often asks you not to.
