Frederick, Maryland therapist: Dr. Brian Sharpless, psychologist
Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Dr. Brian Sharpless

Psychologist, Ph.D., Clinical Psychology; M.A., Philosophy
There is unfortunately a great deal of misinformation about NPD in the media and online. It is also frequently misdiagnosed for other conditions. I have experience both assessing and treating NPD. In terms of assessment, I use reliable clinical instruments (i.e., those used in clinical trials) to establish/rule out this diagnosis. For therapy, I apply several forms of contemporary psychodynamic therapies shown to be helpful in treating personality disorders (i.e., Transference-Focused Psychotherapy, Supportive-Expressive Therapy, and Mentalization-Based Treatment). I have published professional works (i.e., articles and a book) on psychodynamic therapy as well. Please note that I do not do couple's therapy and that I will not schedule appointments intended for other people (e.g., spouses, family members). All potential patients must contact me directly.

Olympia, Washington therapist: Tara Murphy, psychologist
Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Tara Murphy

Psychologist, Psy.D.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder is often misunderstood and frequently misused as an insult on social media. In reality, most people show traits of narcissism at times, but true NPD is less common and far more complex. My work focuses on helping clients (and those impacted by them) understand the protective roots of narcissism—often tied to shame, neglect, or unmet needs for validation. Using IFS, psychodynamic, interpersonal, and mindfulness approaches, I support authentic self-awareness, accountability, and healthier relationships. My diagnostic expertise helps clarify the difference between narcissistic traits and full NPD.

Raleigh, North Carolina therapist: Nour Counseling, counselor/therapist
Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Nour Counseling

Counselor/Therapist
Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is one of the most stigmatized and misunderstood diagnoses in mental health. It’s often reduced to labels like “self-centered” or “manipulative,” without acknowledging the deeper patterns underneath—patterns that are often shaped by early experiences, attachment wounds, and the need to protect a fragile sense of self. For some, being given this diagnosis can feel confusing or even confronting. For others, it may not fully capture the complexity of what they’re experiencing. At Nour Counseling, we approach this work with nuance, not judgment. We don’t rely on surface-level labels—we work with you to understand the underlying patterns: how you relate to yourself, how you navigate relationships, how you manage vulnerability, and what happens when your sense of self feels threatened. From there, we actively support you in building greater self-awareness, emotional range, and more stable, reciprocal ways of connecting with others. This includes working through defensiveness, exploring underlying insecurities, and developing tools for communication and regulation that feel more grounded and sustainable. We also consider the cultural and relational context that shaped these patterns, so you’re not reduced to a diagnosis. This is thoughtful, collaborative work focused on helping you move toward relationships—and a sense of self—that feel more stable, connected, and real.
