Adrienne Sharma-Richardson PhD MEd RP OCT
Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Gestalt Psychotherapist Somatic Experiencing Practitioner Gottman Trained Couples Therapist
"The Gestalt perspective is inherently relational.
Anxiety symptoms experienced in the body are understood as individual expressions of relational suffering (Roubal, Gecele, & Francesetti, 2013) when the individual’s process of contacting with other people lacks spontaneity and fluidity.
In such cases, the style of interpersonal contact is rigidly distorted by fixed relational patterns, and needs are not being met within relationships.
Relating to others and oneself according to a need to “do the right thing” could be one example of such distortions, narrowing the possibilities of experience and of creative adjustment (Robine, 2013).
The flow of figure/ground formation becomes disrupted, because the person fears taking risks to find creative ways
toward mutually satisfactory contact.
While the arousal is present, the organism is inhibited or even paralyzed.
In therapy, support is needed to transform anxiety into fluid and creative excitement.
The support comes from the therapeutic relationship, in which the needs of the client are recognized and validated.
In the safe therapeutic situation, the client’s inhibition is reduced and the arousal of her/his organism can be directed towards an expression of relationally felt needs.
A client's experience could then be:
“With the therapist I can risk being my way without judging it as right or wrong”.
The paralyzing anxiety is transformed into an excitement of discovering new creative ways of contact.
The client experiments with them first in the safe psychotherapeutic relationship and later also with other people
(Herrera, Mstibovskyi, Roubal & Brownell, 2018)."

You are not alone. Especially in today’s hectic and fast-paced society, anxiety is experienced by most people at some point in their lives. Low levels of anxiety are usually considered normal and can even be motivating. However, when it becomes too much to bear and starts to affect your daily life, anxiety can cause and contribute to numerous mental and physical problems.
It is important to know that anxiety and stress go hand-in-hand. When stress starts to build up in your life, you may feel anxious more often. This anxiety can develop into a disorder if left unchecked. Sometimes there is a clear precipitating factor, such as a traumatic event, that can lead to uncontrollable anxiety. However, most of the time people just experience a general feeling of constant unease, worry, fear, or agitation that persists over time. Whatever the cause, there is help available; no one has to suffer through this alone.
How McDowall Integrative Psychology & Healthcare can help you.
At McDowall Integrative Psychology & Healthcare, we take pride in providing our clients with a warm, confidential and safe environment so you will feel open to discuss whatever is on your mind. Making you feel comfortable each and every time you visit is very important to us.
Some stress at work is normal, but if you find yourself under a lot of pressure and this negatively affects other areas of your life such as your social, personal, and physical domains, then you might benefit from our counselling services.
We provide a confidential, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment where you can speak to one of our therapists about the issues you are experiencing. We will help you implement some coping strategies or improve your existing ones in order to improve your well-being, not simply during your work day but throughout the long-term. We look forward to working with you through the pressures you are facing and help strengthen your resilience to external and internal contributors of stress.

Anxiety and anticipating unpleasant outcomes can interfere with our pursuits, happiness and relationships. It can come in various forms: panic attacks, obsessions, fears of people, things and situations. It can be experienced in chest pains, heart palpitations, phobias, and shortness of breath. How it is dealt with can also vary from facing it head-on to avoidance, denial, excessive alcohol, passivity, and impulsive actions. Together, we will look at what you are anxious about, explore the roots of the anxieties and then work towards dismantling these anxieties at the root while helping you deal more constructively with them.
