As an attachment therapist, I believe early trauma often originates within our family of origin, where unmet emotional, physical, or psychological needs may have left lasting imprints. These unmet needs—whether they involve a lack of nurturing, emotional attunement, or consistent support—can deeply affect our sense of security and shape how we view ourselves and others. Over time, these early experiences can contribute to feelings of insecurity, low self-worth, and difficulty forming healthy relationships. By addressing these foundational wounds, we can begin to heal the parts of ourselves that still carry the pain of our early unmet needs and work toward developing a stronger, more secure sense of self. My approach to trauma treatment is rooted in Expressive Arts Therapy (EXAT), recognizing that trauma, particularly pre-verbal trauma, often resides in the body beyond the reach of traditional talk therapy. EXAT offers a unique and powerful way to access and process these deeply held experiences.
Key aspects of our work include:
Utilizing multiple artistic modalities to bypass cognitive defenses and access implicit memories
Engaging the body's wisdom through movement, sound, and visual expression
Addressing pre-verbal trauma through non-verbal, sensory-based interventions
Integrating "brain-wise" arts-based techniques to support trauma reparation and recovery
EXAT provides a safe, non-threatening avenue for expressing and processing traumatic experiences that may be difficult or impossible to verbalize. Through creative expression, we work to release trapped emotions, reframe traumatic narratives, and restore a sense of safety and control.
This approach is particularly effective for:
Childhood trauma and developmental trauma
Complex PTSD
Somatic symptoms related to trauma
Dissociative disorders
The goal is to help clients reconnect with their bodies, regulate their nervous systems, and integrate fragmented aspects of their experiences. By engaging multiple senses and tapping into the body's innate healing capacity, EXAT offers a holistic path to trauma recovery and resilience.
When people hear the word 'trauma', they may envision a horrific, life altering event. Although this could very well be the case, trauma is more of an internal process that is dictated not so much by the external event, but rather by the internal response to that event. People who are impacted by trauma are often still connected to that internal reaction and taken back there when they encounter certain triggers. In working with clients who may identify as trauma or PTSD victims, I aim to find ways to process their trauma to whatever degree feels comfortable while also reeling them back into the present moment and coaching them on how to do this outside of therapy. I also aim to strengthen the neuronal pathways that let one know they are safe and that they can heal from the past. Schedule a free 15-minute consultation to ensure we are a good fit.
