Aaron Kapin
Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, LMT
While there are often mental components to anger you'll want to address with a talk therapist, there's also a physical component that we can work on using somatic approaches:
Out of control anger is often your nervous system's "fight" response kicking in so intensely that it's hard to keep your cool. Anger serves an important purpose, but we want to know that we can still stay connected to our best selves even while we are angry.
We can use body-focused techniques to be able to recognize when anger is about to kick in, and to teach your body new ways of responding to that anger. For example, you may find yourself saying to me "I noticed I was getting hot and agitated, so I excused myself for a couple minutes."
You may find yourself able to focus your energy much more quickly than you used to, to come back focused and goal oriented. You may still feel 'mad' but it may be anger that is working for you, in alignment with your values.

Would you like to express anger and other emotions in calm, respectful ways? Either through individual or group therapy, you can learn how to catch yourself when you feel worked up so you can choose how to respond instead of reacting in a way you might later regret. Anger is not always the problem by itself; it can reflect stress, hurt, trauma, relationship patterns, impulsivity, or difficulty regulating intense emotions. Our psychologists help clients understand what is driving anger, recognize escalation earlier, communicate more effectively, and develop healthier ways of responding without ignoring the concerns underneath it.

Anger is often the result of deep injustices. While the anger you feel may be justified, holding onto it is not healthy. It can eat away at a person like a cancer. By learning how to establish healthy boundaries in life and to forgive those who hurt you, you can live a happy life free of anger.
