Morgantown, West Virginia therapist: Dr. Amana Carvalho, psychologist
LGBTQ+ Issues

Dr. Amana Carvalho

Psychologist, Psy.D.
I specialize in LGBTQ issues, including transgender healthcare. My approach is affirming and inclusive. Therapy provides a safe, supportive space for clients to explore gender identity and/or sexual orientation, romantic relationships, and experiences of Minority Stress without judgment. As an affirming therapist, I validate clients' identities, help them navigate challenges like discrimination, coming out, or family rejection, and support mental health and self-acceptance. This approach fosters empowerment, resilience, and personal growth. “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.”

Miami, Florida therapist: Deborah Redmond, marriage and family therapist
LGBTQ+ Issues

Deborah Redmond

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
Everyone more or less faces and deals with issues and challenges in their life. For LGBT persons, there may often be additional and possibly intense challenges due to their being LGBT. We can work together to help you determine which issues are and are not related to you being LGBT. In so doing, we can help you learn, practice and develop strategies that avoid overly intensifying non-LGBT issues while validating and addressing those challenges in your life that are indeed directly related to you being LGBT.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania therapist: Shira Collings, licensed professional counselor
LGBTQ+ Issues

Shira Collings

Licensed Professional Counselor, MS, LPC
As a queer, nonbinary woman myself, I greatly enjoy supporting other members of the LGBTQIA+ community in exploring their sexual orientation and gender identity, navigating the process of coming out, and building relationships with people who are accepting and affirming of them. I have experience co-facilitating a therapy group for trans individuals as well as supporting those who are pursuing gender affirming medical care. I am especially passionate about supporting LGBTQIA+ folks who are working to build their families.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania therapist: Erika Barrington, licensed professional counselor
LGBTQ+ Issues

Erika Barrington

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, BC-DMT
I am a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, and because of how I've felt in my own therapy over the years, it has always been a priority to me to make sure I'm offering an affirming space for this community. I spent time working as a peer counselor in my local LGBTQIA+ community center and was a supervisor there for a short time; worked as a camp counselor for trans youth; completed a year-long training program on offering trans-affirming care in therapy. I do utilize my own experience to understand what clients might be feeling and needing, but its also important to me to value the way that sexuality and gender are diverse experiences based on race, class, country of origin, culture, and so many other factors. I never assume that my experience will be just the same as someone else, and keep an eye out for the ways that my privilege might have insulated me as a queer, genderqueer person. I believe that our society's restrictive/oppressive views about sexuality and gender are impacted by patriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalism, so I hold this truth when understanding how a client may have internalized certain beliefs, and where the responsibility lies. For example, I would not ever blame a client for internalized homophobia, transphobia, but instead bring curiosity to environment, historical trends, and how we can work towards more internal liberation.
