Ottawa, Ontario therapist: Barbara Freedman, counselor/therapist
LGBT Issues

Barbara Freedman

Counsellor/Therapist, M.Ed., OAMHP(Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals)
I have offered LGBT clients my guidance and support through all stages of their transition process. In addition to being on the Quick Victim Response List for Ottawa Victim Services , my work with “The Well,” (a drop in day shelter for woman and children), along with my role as a Distant Counsellor on Presto Experts - (On-line Chat & Phone Counselling) afforded me the opportunity to work with many LGBTQ issues. The process of counselling this group has involved psychoeducation, along with reframing the discussion to a natural aspect of human diversity-along a continuum. I feel that my role in addition to normalizing clients' feelings, is to counsel them regarding the range of treatment options along with their implications. I have explored these members inner conflicts including those of internalized oppression. . One must understand their own internal process to be able to explain these to others. I have often heard the words echoed "How can I possibly explain this to other people when I cannot even explain it to myself." Self awareness involves discussing ones feeling brought on by guilt, and shame for wanting to be themselves and includes discussing fears of coming out . Resolution of these internal struggles allows them to further grow and develop their self identity. Self -understanding has an enormous impact on self actualization and identity reformation as well as managing intra-external conflicts. Having a stronger sense of self helps the individual better stand up to such conflicts posed by a non accepting family, work, or society. A further task in helping the LGBT community is to be instrumental in assisting them in finding social support. Connecting with others, especially those in groups with similar emotions and issues is essential to belonging, and to decrease isolation. I look forward to working with more LGBT clients to watch them grow and develop their unique self identity.

I have been working with LGBTQ+ populations since my practice began. I am a queer ciswoman who believes nonmainstream populations necessitate and deserve informed care. I am well-educated on gender identity, sexual identity, sexuality, polyamory/open relationships, and kink/BDSM. I believe an intersectionality lens is essential so I also apply knowledge of race, gender, class, and ability politics to my work.
