Saguenay is a regional city in Quebec's Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, set among dramatic fjord landscapes in a part of the province that is culturally distinct, strongly francophone, and economically anchored by aluminum production and the forestry industry. Geographic isolation, cold and dark winters, and the economic pressures of a resource-dependent region contribute to elevated rates of depression and seasonal affective disorder, and mental health services are delivered almost entirely in French through the CIUSSS du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. The University of Quebec at Chicoutimi (UQAC) has a psychology department that contributes trained professionals to the regional mental health workforce, and both public and private services are available in the city. Common therapy concerns include depression, anxiety, relationship and family stress, and the particular challenges of rural and regional life in a community where access to specialist care may require significant travel or telehealth.
