Spirituality is key to transcendence of all egoic positions as formed from trauma. The ego is illusory and false although we identify with. A spiritual focus to therapy allows one to be the "witness" of this phenomenon thereby gradually coming to an recognition that our negative thoughts and feeling is not "me".
