North York, Ontario therapist: Melissa Huang, registered psychotherapist
Alzheimers

Melissa Huang

Registered Psychotherapist, (Qualifying), MA
A dementia diagnosis changes life for everyone it touches, and the grief, fear, and uncertainty that come with it are often carried in silence. Whether you're living with early-stage memory changes or caring for someone who is, you'll find a warm, nonjudgmental space here to process what's happening, honour what's being lost, and find steadiness in what remains. My background in rehabilitation support means I understand both the practical and emotional weight of cognitive change. The goal isn't just to cope with each stage, it's to stay connected to yourself and the people you love, protect your own wellbeing, and find moments of meaning even in difficulty. Together we'll work toward feeling more grounded, more supported, and more equipped to navigate the road ahead.

Though I haven't yet worked with any Alzheimers clients, I have worked with some Parkinson's subjects as well as other neurological problems. Hypnosis has been shown to be effective in helping with Parkinson's tremors as well as other aspects of the condition including depression. I was asked if I could help someone suffering from a condition called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which is related to ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease. It is a condition with no cure or treatment. When I first met the client, he had been deteriorating for 12 years and was expected to die soon. He was confined to a wheelchair and could no longer speak. He drooled constantly and though wearing a bib, already in the morning was soaked with saliva. He suffered from tremors and got locked in repetitive movements several times a day, had trouble sleeping and couldn't get motivated to do his physical therapy, the only thing his doctors could offer him. In our first session, we were able to eliminate the tremors and repetitive movements, get him to sleep more soundly, and motivate him to do his PT. After the second session he was able to speak for the first time in ears and he got out of his wheelchair and walked. After 5 sessions you couldn't even tel he was sick and now, 6 years later, he's till walking the dog, gardening, hiking his favorite trails.

Calgary, Alberta therapist: Mia Klassen, licensed professional counselor
Alzheimers

Mia Klassen

Licensed Professional Counsellor, MPCC #3875, CT #2438, LSCC
Watching someone you love disappear into dementia is one of life's most painful journeys. I walked this path with my mother through every stage of Alzheimer's, and I understand the exhaustion, grief, and guilt that caregivers carry. Together, we'll create space for your complex emotions—the love and the resentment, the hope and the despair. You'll learn to regulate your nervous system amid the chaos, find compassion for yourself in impossible moments, and navigate each stage with greater clarity. This isn't about fixing what can't be fixed—it's about sustaining yourself while honoring both your loved one and your own well-being. ---
