We cannot think or talk our way out of posttraumatic stress. However, in a safe therapeutic relationship that addresses how trauma lives in our body, we can heal.

Post traumatic stress disorder can change the trajectory of our entire lives with a single event, or can be the result of chronic, repeated traumatic events. In either case, PTSD can be a very lonely disorder that continues to torment the individual and possibly their loved ones for years after the event has passed. Learning how to process trauma in therapy can sometimes be too overwhelming without medication management. Let's learn if medication can assist in managing some of those secondary effects of PTSD such as anxiety, panic and depression.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) often creates very painful symptoms and is something for which I use a therapy called Prolonged Exposure (PE). In this therapy, we will revisit traumatic situations, process painful emotions, and change unhelpful beliefs about yourself and the world around you as a result of your trauma. People are often amazed at how quickly this treatment can work and by the very meaningful change that can result. For these reasons, this is one of my favorite treatments to provide.

When trauma hits, it's unexpected and our systems aren't prepared for handling it. It's not a weakness, it's just being human. While our bodies try to process what has happened, they become overwhelmed and sometimes stuck and it can't process the trauma properly. Instead, we end up with nightmares, intrusive images, flashbacks, irritability, numbness, stomach aches, and other scary symptom's. This is our bodies actually trying to protect us. They're just a little confused on how to do it. We'll reprocess the trauma and the symtpoms to help your body learn that it is safe now and doesn't have to keep you on such high alert.
