As a certified nurse midwife, I provided bedside care to women and their families for 14 years before moving onto mental health. The first thing I did as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner was to start a perinatal service to support women throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Postpartum can be a challenging time for the birthing parent as well as their partner, robbing them of bonding with their baby. This is a multifactorial condition that can be treated with early intervention and support.
