Personality disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterised by enduring patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that significantly deviate from cultural expectations. These patterns usually emerge in adolescence or early adulthood, are inflexible, and cause distress or significant impairment in social, occupational, and personal functioning.
Core Characteristics
Pervasive & Inflexible: Thoughts, emotional responses, and behaviours remain rigid and consistent across a wide range of personal and social situations.
Distorted Self-Image and Relational Patterns: A person's perception of themselves, others, and events is often distorted, often leading to intense, unstable, or difficult interpersonal relationships.
Emotional Regulation Challenges: Many personality disorders involve intense emotional swings, high impulsivity, or profound difficulty managing distress.
Understanding the Clusters
Clinicians generally group personality disorders into three distinct categories (clusters) based on shared symptoms and characteristics:
Cluster A (Odd or Eccentric): Includes Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal personality disorders. Individuals often display peculiar or unusual behaviours, social detachment, and distorted ways of thinking.
Cluster B (Dramatic, Emotional, or Erratic): Includes Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, and Narcissistic personality disorders. Individuals often struggle to regulate emotions, control impulses, and maintain stable self-esteem or relationships.
Cluster C (Anxious or Fearful): Includes Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive personality disorders. Individuals frequently experience chronic anxiety, deep-seated fears of rejection, or an excessive need for control and perfection.
Treatment and Outlook
While personality disorders can be complex and deeply ingrained, they are treatable. Specialised psychotherapy—such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)—along with supportive psychiatric care, can help individuals develop healthier coping mechanisms, build stable relationships, and improve their quality of life.
Remember: A personality disorder describes patterns of behaviour and thought, not who a person is at their core. With patience, self-awareness, and professional guidance, meaningful growth and healing are possible.

Emma Poxon
Counsellor/Therapist, MA Person-Centred Experiential Counselling
Personality disorders can feel completely overwhelming, like there's no way out. As your therapist I am here to be with you, reminding you that you are not alone. We can explore how your personality disorder feels for you, when it is at its worst, and help you to gain more of a sense of control over this. You are not a problem to be fixed, my aim as your therapist is to try to provide the right conditions to allow you to explore whatever you want to bring to therapy to support your growth. This isn't a therapeutic approach wherein I will set a treatment plan or tell you what to do. We will work together as a partnership rather than me taking away your autonomy. I absolutely love the work I do, it is the biggest privilege being let into people’s personal worlds and seeing the immense growth of my clients. I hope to hear from you soon!
