Cullins Psychological and Counseling Services PLLC

Psychologist, Joanna Cullins PsyD
Anxiety is prevalent in our society today and we are living in a time when we are inundated with information, whether we want it or not. Life can be stessful and, at times, alarming. It has never been more important to learn how to manage stress in a healthy way. Cognitive Begavioral therapy is a great tool for this. It increases our awareness of potentially catastrophic thinking and helps us to identify and change the thoughts and feelings that tend to trigger, maintain, or exacerbate anxiety. OCD, PTSD, phobias, panic disorders, and social discomfort are all manifestations of anxiety. Psychoeducation can be a powerful tool, as when we understand the root of our anxiety (nature vs, nurture or a combination of both), we can better understand both the physiological and emotional impact of chronic anxiety. Working to reduce the physical responses and resultant "what if" thinking can be helpful, as well as learning to tolerate the stress (Stress Inoculation Therapy) and self soothe.

Fight, flight, or freeze. Anxiety can send us into a state of panic or sound like a low hum of thoughts in the back of our mind. It can lead us to self-doubt and procrastination or feeling "stuck" in our thoughts. The same thought might be stuck on repeat or you may feel flooded by constant new worries. Having both lived experience with and education on anxiety, I am in a unique position to offer insight and concrete skills on managing your thoughts and worries.

Anxiety almost always makes sense once we understand where it came from. Together, we’ll explore the feelings underneath the worry — fears of not being loved, safe, or enough. We’ll look at how early relationships may have taught you that the world requires this level of vigilance, examine the story anxiety has written about you, and explore what fear might be guarding against.
