Can Your Partner Still Go to Bars After an Affair?

Marina Edelman | TrueMe Counseling

“My friends are going out Saturday. Am I allowed to go?”

It sounds like a simple question.

But after infidelity, it can turn into an argument that lasts all weekend.

Maybe your partner had an affair with someone from work.

Maybe it started during happy hour.

Maybe a close friend knew what was happening and helped cover it up.

Now your partner wants to go out with the same group of friends.

And you’re wondering:

Am I being controlling if I say I’m not comfortable with that?

Shouldn’t they understand why this bothers me?

How are we supposed to rebuild trust if they keep putting themselves in the same situations?

These are conversations I regularly help couples work through in affair recovery therapy.

And I don’t believe there’s one universal set of rules that works for every marriage.

The details matter.

A friend who knew about an affair and encouraged someone to tell their spouse is different from a friend who provided an alibi.

Going to a work event isn’t automatically a problem. But if an affair developed during private drinks with a coworker, returning to the same situation immediately after discovery deserves a serious conversation.

And asking for transparency after betrayal isn’t necessarily controlling.

But there’s a difference between saying:

“I can’t rebuild trust while you’re secretly communicating with the person you had an affair with.”

And saying:

“You cheated, so I get to decide where you go and who you see from now on.”

One addresses a specific breach of trust. The other creates a relationship built around permanent control.

Some boundaries may be temporary.

Others may become expectations both partners decide they want to keep.

The difficult part is figuring out which agreements are helping the relationship recover and which ones are being maintained out of fear.

I often ask couples:

“What would need to be different this time for this situation to feel trustworthy?”

And eventually:

“What will your partner choose when nobody is checking?”
