I am a mindfulness-based psychotherapist who believes that in the right context - namely, one of self-compassion and curiosity - we are all capable of healing and growth. I guide my clients in learning how to relate to themselves and the world in a way that is more conducive to creating desired changes in their lives. In a phrase, that's a matter of shifting from "How can I fix myself?" to "How can I take better care of myself?". If you're interested in seeing if we'd be a good fit, please visit my website or send me an email to schedule a free, 20-minute consultation call. I'd love to chat!

Approach Description: My approach to psychotherapy is one grounded in radical acceptance as the first step to change. Acceptance is not passive or permissive and it does not mean you have to like things. It is simply a position of clear-seeing. Rather than spending mental and emotional energy resisting reality, we can courageously see things the way they are and then move forward from that place. Moving forward can include a variety of approaches. I use mindfulness-based and gestalt therapy interventions to guide my clients in somatic work based in self-awareness, skillful expression, and self-soothing. I draw from gestalt therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to facilitate increased awareness of parts of ourselves and how to best relate to them and take care of them. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) provide useful tools that allow us to identify patterns of thought and behavior and utilize specific strategies to change them. Our human minds are storytelling machines and therapy can help us increase awareness of what stories we are telling ourselves and begin to give more attention to alternative, more accurate stories. I am also trained in trauma-informed care, including EMDR therapy, and frequently work with clients on healing past experiences that feel stuck or are creating challenges in the client's present-day life. Creating a safe environment in paramount in that work, both externally - such as through boundary-setting and having the emotionally supportive environment of a therapy session - as well as internally - achieved through increased mastery of one's nervous system. In a gentle way, and following the client's sense of readiness, I support my clients in finding that safety and then finding themselves again.

My work as a psychotherapist is grounded in principles of mindfulness, including acceptance, non-judgment, compassion, and curiosity. I believe -and have observed in my work - that those foundations give people the optimal mental and emotional environment in which to change. When we are curious about what's going on in our lives, it allows a certain amount of softening to occur, and from that place our natural creativity and drive for growth can flourish.
I aim to find the ideal balance for each client, and in each session, between open-ended processing and skill-building. In other words, I try to provide just the right amount of guidance - not so much that I'm getting in the way of the client's journey, but not so little that they feel directionless. With open-ended processing, I see my role as a one of creating space for the client to take a journey of self-discovery. I am an empathic witness to their journey. With skill-building, I take a more active role in which I see myself as an experienced guide. I'll share invitations and ideas I have as we work through issues and help facilitate an action plan. I view those action plans as non-judgmental and experimental, as there is the obvious value in success but also lots to learn from challenges that arise when trying to do something new in our lives.
I hold a steadfast belief in the basic goodness of each individual and the workability of all states of mind. I see mental health symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, or problematic behaviors, such as compulsive behaviors or relationship challenges, as outgrowths of pain and fear in our lives. When confronted with challenges or non-ideal environments, we develop "creative adjustments" to try to protect ourselves and get through the situations as best we can. I guide my clients in recognizing these and developing an attitude of gratitude for them. They served us at one time and were critically valuable when we didn't know another way to cope. Unfortunately, we often get stuck in those patterns of behavior, even when they no longer serve us. Therapy can be a process of shifting our patterns of behavior to be better suited to our current life context. That shift typically involves validating our past creative adjustments - honoring them as the best we could do at that time - and then getting creative and courageous in experimenting with new ways of doing things. As the therapist, I am there to guide you through that process, offering insights, direction, support, and compassionate accountability.
I truly love connecting with people in the deep way that therapy allows. I find the work to be inspirational, as I am continually exposed to the incredible strength, resilience, and wisdom of my clients. It is a privilege and an honor to be a part of their lives and join them on their journey in life. That path inevitably has its ups and downs, but along the way we can find some humor, some things to look forward to, and little islands of goodness to savor. It is entirely possible to relax into the ebbs and flows of life and learn new ways of relating to yourself and the world that make the journey more worthwhile and enjoyable.
