New York City, New York therapist: Nancy Burns, counselor/therapist
Depression

Nancy Burns

Counselor/Therapist, JD, LMHC, LPC, MA, EMDR Certified
Much of my work involves working with people who have experienced repeated bouts of depression. Besides the sadness, hopelessness, loneliness, and inability to experience joy that accompanies the depressed mood, they might experience periods of irritability. The goal of our work together will be to work with your negative thoughts so that you are able to experience joy again and be a full participant in the richness of life. - - - "Feelings are something you have, not something you are." West Hollywood, California therapist: Dr. Ingrid Solano, psychologist
Depression

Dr. Ingrid Solano

Psychologist, PhD
I work with both adults and adolescents on an individual basis. Individual psychotherapy helps clients deal with particular issues, symptoms, and stressors. My goal is to provide a safe, non judgmental space for you to explore who you are, how you relate to others, and what supports you on your journey to become your best self. I lean into, listen, understand, and enhance authentic expression. Together we create a collaborative process of transformation. What that means and what that looks like is different for everyone... I offer evidence-based therapies from a curious, nonjudgmental philosophy. No matter where you have been, evidence-based therapies focus on changing the now. I strive to help my clients experience the world mindfully, and in accordance with their personal values. Through our work in cultivating an affirming, authentic, and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship, I provide support while we collaboratively deconstruct what is causing distress in your life and preventing you from being your most effective and authentic self. Individual therapy facilitates insight and growth, becoming more effective at actualizing your values, and building more authentic relationships with yourself and with others. While there are many forms of therapy you can pursue, my expertise is in time-limited, evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT), the Unified Protocol for emotional disorders, and third wave CBT such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness based interventions. (I do have experience in, and practice, an eclectic arrangement of other modalities as well-- when applicable or specifically requested.) We explore thoughts, beliefs, and understanding, while also prioritizing behavioral processes that focus on your contexts and the functions of how you relate to your internal experiences. CBT is designed to help individuals notice and shift their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to get relief from painful emotions such as anxiety and sadness. Third wave interventions also promote well-being through developing coping skills, personal values, and metacognition that complement traditional CBT interventions. I provide flexible, customizable approaches that look different with each patient. I empower my clients to discover their strength, clarity, creativity, autonomy, resilience, motivation, and confidence in meeting whatever happens next. I provide individualized tools to use in everyday decision-making that will help those changes last. With these modalities I treat individuals who are impacted by depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship distress, burnout, divorce, loss, uncertainty, stigma, and other life experiences, diagnoses, and stressors. We explore the sources, experiences, and beliefs that impact how you relate with the world and implement change in your life. You are the expert on you, but are you your most effective and content self?

Depression is very common, yet the origins and its presentation can be variable. We can explore what methodologies are a best fit for you. Typically, I find psychodynamic talk therapy to be useful as we work collaboratively to develop insight and understanding. Cognitive behavioral therapy can provide us many strategies and new perspectives. Acceptance and commitment therapy helps us to think flexibly and make choices that are aligned with our values.

Liberation Therapy

Counselor/Therapist, LMHC
Depression often has understandable roots—loss, trauma, burnout, isolation, shame, or feeling stuck in a life that doesn’t feel like yours. In therapy we work slowly and compassionately, focusing on both the emotional and practical aspects of depression: meaning, motivation, nervous system regulation, and rebuilding connection to yourself and others.

Depression

Sara Fraser

I work with mood disorders of all types to help folks tease out what is symptom, what is sign of overwhelm and what is external to them. Interventions might include working on activation, healthy and adaptive self-care, relational issues such as limit setting and boundaries and work-life balance as well as parts that might be informed by past trauma. Liaising and coordinating with medical and other professionals that are involved in treatment is considered important here as well.

Depression

Dr. Stéphanie Gamache, PhD

Hypnotherapist, PhD
Depression is often an expression of emotional loss, internal conflict, and blocked vitality rather than a problem to be treated only at the level of symptoms. My work integrates psychoanalytic exploration, somatic awareness, and hypnosis to understand how sadness, withdrawal, and numbness are shaped by early relational experience and lived in the body. Together, we work toward restoring emotional movement, self-understanding, and a renewed capacity for connection and aliveness.

Dr Laura Soden

Psychologist, PhD, Clinical Psychology
Depression, rather than a monolithic affliction, can have genetic components or be a reaction to traumatic life events. Both its source and severity will indicate whether psycho-active medication is indicated. In either case, however, cognitive strategies learned and practiced within the therapeutic relationship offer effective long-term management and often, relief.

New York City has the largest and most diverse therapy community in the world, with practitioners representing virtually every therapeutic modality, cultural background, and specialty area. The city's pace, density, and cost of living generate pervasive anxiety and burnout, while its diverse boroughs mean therapists fluent in dozens of languages serve communities from every corner of the globe.
