Treatment Approach
- Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Helps people accept difficult thoughts and feelings instead of fighting them, while committing to actions that reflect their values. It blends mindfulness with practical behavior strategies.
- Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
- Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
- Eclectic Therapy Draws from different therapeutic methods based on what fits each client best. It is flexible and personalized rather than following one single model.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
- Existential / Humanistic Therapy Encourages people to explore meaning, freedom, and authenticity in their lives. It focuses on personal growth and living in alignment with one’s values.
- Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
- Gottman Method Couples Therapy Based on decades of research, this method gives couples tools to improve communication, manage conflict, and strengthen intimacy.
- Integrative Therapy Combines techniques from multiple approaches into a customized plan. It adapts to each client’s unique situation and needs.
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
- Multicultural Therapy Acknowledges the role of culture, race, and identity in mental health. It values diversity and adapts treatment to each person’s background.
- Narrative Therapy Encourages people to view problems as separate from themselves and reframe their life story. It helps build resilience and self-identity.
- Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian) Emphasizes empathy, unconditional positive regard, and authenticity. It provides a safe space for self-discovery and growth.
- Psychoanalytic Therapy Based on Freud’s theories, it explores unconscious conflicts and past experiences. It seeks to bring hidden issues into awareness.
- Psychodynamic Therapy Explores unconscious thoughts and patterns that influence current behavior. It builds insight into how the past impacts the present.
- Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) Helps clients challenge and replace irrational beliefs. It is an action-oriented approach for lasting change.
- Relational Psychotherapy Emphasizes the healing power of the therapist-client relationship. It uses trust and safety as a foundation for change.
- Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.

At Avena Psychological Services, we are dedicated to fostering a compassionate and transformative therapeutic environment where each client feels heard, understood, and empowered. Our approach to psychotherapy is grounded in several core principles that guide our practice and shape our therapeutic relationships.
Client-Centered Approach:
Our practice is firmly rooted in a client-centered philosophy, emphasizing that each individual is the expert on their own life and experiences. We prioritize creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can openly explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By valuing the client’s perspective and autonomy, we collaboratively work together to set meaningful goals and develop personalized treatment plans.
Integrative and Holistic Methodology:
We believe in an integrative approach to therapy, drawing from a variety of evidence-based modalities to address the unique needs of each client. Whether employing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Mindfulness-Based approaches, or other therapeutic techniques, we tailor our interventions to best support each individual’s journey. Our holistic methodology considers the whole person, including their emotional, cognitive, social, and physical well-being, recognizing that mental health is deeply interconnected with all aspects of life.
Strengths-Based Perspective:
Our practice embraces a strengths-based perspective, focusing on identifying and leveraging the inherent strengths and resources of our clients. We believe that everyone possesses the resilience and capabilities necessary for growth and healing. By highlighting these strengths and building upon them, we empower clients to overcome challenges and achieve their personal goals.
Empathy and Compassion:
Central to our therapeutic approach is the cultivation of empathy and compassion. We strive to deeply understand and validate our clients’ experiences, fostering a therapeutic relationship built on trust and respect. Our goal is to provide support that not only addresses immediate concerns but also encourages personal growth and self-compassion.
Evidence-Based Practices:
We are committed to using evidence-based practices that are grounded in scientific research and clinical expertise. Our therapists stay informed about the latest developments in the field of psychology and continually refine their skills to provide effective and up-to-date interventions. By integrating research-backed methods with clinical experience, we ensure that our clients receive high-quality care that is both effective and reliable.
Collaborative and Empowering:
We view therapy as a collaborative process where the client and therapist work together as partners. We empower clients to take an active role in their own healing by involving them in decision-making processes, goal-setting, and evaluating progress. Our aim is to equip clients with the tools and insights needed to manage their mental health independently and effectively.
Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion:
Avena Psychological Services is committed to providing an inclusive and culturally sensitive therapeutic environment. We respect and celebrate the diversity of our clients, including their cultural, racial, gender, sexual, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our therapists are trained to understand and address the impact of these factors on mental health and to provide care that is respectful and attuned to each client’s unique context.
Continuous Growth and Learning:
We believe in the importance of ongoing professional development and personal growth for both our clients and our team. Our practice fosters an environment of continuous learning, where we remain open to new ideas, techniques, and feedback. By staying engaged with the evolving field of psychotherapy, we strive to enhance our practice and better serve our clients.
