When I was in therapy school, I had a session with a mentor who asked about my plans for after graduation. I told her that I had no plans to practice; my school had a well known 1st year program that most people only took for personal growth but didn't continue the 3 year practitioner training. When she asked why I wouldn't go through with it, I told her that my life had been such a chaotic, sputtering mess at times that I felt nobody would ever come to me for help. Who would want their life to turn out like mine? And she said "Kari, in order to create an antidote for anything, you need a drop of the poison. Turn and look behind you at the vast library of healing potions you have the power to create. Those are your natural resources that no one can ever take away from you. They can't teach you that in school, but those experiences only add to, not detract from, your ability to empathize with other people." And that's the moment I realized I would become a therapist.
