With over 24+ years of experience as a therapist working with children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples ensuring compassion through evidence-informed therapeutic services I have both the training and experience in treating a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, ADHD, ADD, Bi-polar, family conflict, contact with the law, addictions, and anger management counselling  I can provide you with a non-judgmental, compassionate, skilled, therapeutic approach to address difficulties in your life and working towards lasting change  My approach is to learn about you and your strengths, to work collaboratively in a relationship based on trust and competency, and to draw on my years of experience and theory.  The most important component of successful therapy is the relationship you have with your therapist. Building relationships is a particular strength of mine which supports best practice approaches  As a committed listener but also a competent therapist, I help you work through your issues and move towards change while not forcing theories, ideas, or practices, on you.

Treatment Approach

  • Behavioral Therapy Uses learning techniques like reinforcement and practice to change unwanted behaviors. It is often applied to phobias, anxiety, and habits.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) One of the most widely used approaches, CBT helps people identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier patterns. It is effective for anxiety, depression, and many other concerns.
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) Builds skills in self-kindness and compassion toward others. It is especially helpful for people who struggle with shame or self-criticism.
  • Contemplative Psychotherapy Combines mindfulness and meditation practices with modern psychology. It encourages awareness and compassion as part of the healing process.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Combines CBT with mindfulness to help regulate emotions, tolerate stress, and build stronger relationships. Originally designed for borderline personality disorder, it’s now used more broadly.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Focuses on strengthening emotional bonds in couples or families. It helps people identify negative cycles and create more secure connections.
  • Family Systems Therapy Looks at problems within the context of the family as a whole. It aims to improve communication and balance in family relationships.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) A short-term approach focused on improving relationships and social support. It is often used for depression and grief.
  • Psychoeducational Therapy Provides education and coping tools about mental health conditions. It empowers clients with knowledge and practical skills.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) Focuses on solutions and future goals rather than past problems. It is practical, short-term, and goal-driven.

Counselling/Psychotherapy is an opportunity to take a look at life’s challenges with a goal of working toward positive change in your journey to well being. Ian offers a caring and confidential space to work toward your goals. He is a Registered Social Worker/Psychotherpist with the College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers of Ontario and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association), is listed in Psychology Today and holds both a Bachelors’ and Masters’ Degrees. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the most commonly used form of Counselling or Psychotherapy. It works by addressing problematic thinking patterns such as self-defeating thoughts, blame, guilt, unfair expectations ("I should be doing this instead"), labelling, and catastrophizing. In sessions, the therapist assists the client by exploring their perspective on the issues, working on increasing insight, using a balanced, evidence-based approach to decision-making, and implementing behavioural changes to increase their quality of life. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is similar to CBT, with emphasis on mood regulation skills for those who experience intense distress. Major components include Mindfulness training, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Emotional Regulation strategies. DBT techniques are often woven into CBT sessions depending on the client's presenting issues. Other treatment modalities such as Emotion Focussed Therapy, Solution-Focussed Therapy and Narrative Therapy also have a significant role in supporting individuals with multiple challenges.
